Our Basalt Block is located in the Hunter Valley among the hills of the Brokenback Mountain Range. In a rarity for the Hunter Valley the vineyard was formed by volcanic activity leading to rich red soil as the underlying basalt rock has broken down. This mineral rich soil produces concentrated, low-yielding grapes which our winemakers use to make this single vineyard wine. Enjoy it's smooth, juicy palate, intense rich mocha and spicy plum fruit leading to the complex earth finish famed by Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The 2014 Hope Estate Basalt Block Shiraz begins with a pleasant aroma chock full of black cherry, blackberry, dried herbs, licorice, leather and mint. The medium-bodied wine tastes smooth, juicy, rich and downright delicious. A nice streak of earthiness along with cola and licorice lead into the dry, long finish. This is a great example of the good things coming out of Australia again!
