Clairette Blanche is an ancient grape from Southern France, with historical mentions going back to the 1500s. It’s not as common today as it once was, but it is still widely planted in Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhone Valley for use in blending.
Most varietal bottlings these days are sparkling wines, not still wines like this one, so we were very eager to check this bottle out. Especially so since it comes from one of the original Rhone Rangers, Randall Grahm, and the acclaimed Bonny Doon Vineyard.

Vintage 2022
Varietals: 100% Clairette Blanche
AVA: Central Coast, CA- Beeswax Vineyard, Arroyo SecoTasting: Lightness captured in a glass. Citrus, lemongrass and anise aromas with pome fruit on the palate, and a crisp and clean finish.
Winemaking: The fruit was hand-picked on October 10th, whole-cluster pressed to a stainless steel tank. Cool fermentation to preserve aromatics. Lees aging for 5 months.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes: Located on a terraced hillside in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Highlands near the Arroyo Seco Gorge. Soils are gravelly and sandy loam with river rock. Cool climate with foggy mornings and cool coastal breeze coming down the Salinas Valley.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Bonny Doon Vineyard Perfect Clairetty opens with a very pleasing aroma of apple, lime and other citrus plus a touch of tropical fruit. There are also hints of herbal notes adding intrigue. It’s a great start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be fresh, round and very smooth. It is very easy to drink with similar flavors to the nose that combine harmoniously in the mouth. It is very satisfying and refreshingly light on alcohol too at just 10.8%.
It ends dry on the mouthwatering, seemingly never ending finish that also has a bit of chalkiness underneath. This is excellent. We also recommend not serving it too cold to appreciate all the layers.
