That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there’s something unmistakable about grapes that come from truly old vines – whether it’s from the low yield of super concentrated fruit, the incredible depth of the root system or something else entirely, these wines have a personality and character that can’t be replicated.

All 4 bottles in today’s fantastically delicious Insider Deal come from the dry-farmed Giannecchini Family Vineyard in the Talmage Bench region of Mendocino County. The vineyard was planted sometime between 1910 and 1920, making it somewhere between 100 and 110-years-old. The wines then spend 18 months or more in 30+% new French oak.

The first two bottles of today’s 4-pack are a new vintage of an old favorite, the 2021 Giannecchini Family Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel. Our previous offers of this wine have been very popular and often requested, and the 2021 is just as good. Accordingly, it gets a Perfect 10 (94+ point) Taste Rating.

The second two bottles of today’s 4-pack are a Super Tuscan style blend of 50% Sangiovese, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Zinfandel, the 2020 Giannecchini Estate Blend. 2021 Giannecchini Old Vine Zinfandel

This head-pruned, dry-farmed old vine Zinfandel is bold and expressive, showcasing dense dark fruit aromas, delicate floral notes, and a terroir-driven character. On the palate, it delivers spicy plum and rich cherry flavors with a long, lingering finish.

Our Old Vine Zinfandel hails from the Talmage Bench region of Mendocino County. Previously farmed by four generations of the Giannecchini family, this vineyard was planted sometime between 1910 and 1920. The gravelly, loam soils and ideal climate contribute to the production of these ultra-premium wine grapes.

Vintage Notes: In 2021, we experienced mild spring weather and early blooms, followed by a heatwave from May to July. Despite the drought, our sheep helped retain soil moisture, resulting in an early harvest from August 12th to October 20th, producing small but highly concentrated berries. This vintage promises exceptional depth and intensity.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Giannecchini Family Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel begins with a full, inviting aroma chocked with wonderful spicy dark berry fruit plus touches of licorice, leather, vanilla, espresso and much more.

Tasting reveals a rich and delicious full-bodied Zin that is very harmonious, balanced and full of the depth and nuance that only old vines can bring. In the mouth it features a smooth texture and all those same touches from the nose including the fantastic spicy dark fruit. It’s still a bit tannic and chewy in its youth, but it is absolutely delicious.

It ends wonderfully with a dry, grippy and very long finish. I’d give it an hour or two to breathe after opening for it to be at its best. It was just as good on day 2. Pair it with beef brisket slathered in barbecue sauce for a match made in heaven!

There’s something magical about old vine Italian varieties planted by California pioneer grape growers. The wines are bold, beautiful, dense and truly express the terroir.

This wine pays homage to Mendocino’s Italian grape growing heritage. The acid draws a clear focused line across the palate reminiscent of the Old World, with firm tannins marking it Californian. It has aromas of cherries and red fruits surely to delight any meal.

Our Estate Blend hails from the Talmage Bench region of Mendocino County. Previously farmed by four generations of the Giannecchini family, this vineyard was planted sometime between 1910 and 1920. The gravelly, loam soils and ideal climate contribute to the production of these ultra-premium wine grapes.

Vintage Notes: The 2020 vintage started out dry and warm. Weeks of 100+ degree weather in early May gave the vines a jump start. The heat held strong until August with a record 116˚ day in July! We started harvest a week earlier than normal, with all white grapes in house and fermenting beautifully by Sept 20th. The temperature cooled down to 80s during the harvest lull and stretched out the hang time on our reds allowing phenolic ripeness of the skins. A welcome cloud cover came on October 10th and allowed the fruit to dehydrate and get more hang time. Tonnages ended up lighter due to low spring rains. We are seeing good color concentration and density in this vintage.

The 2020 Giannecchini Family Vineyard Estate Red begins with a lovely, enticing aroma of black cherry, violets, ripe blackberry, cedar, touches of dried herbs, leather and baking spice. It’s a fantastic start!

The wine tastes juicy, bright and smooth with very good acidity and great balance. It’s very easy to drink but also has lots of layers and all those same touches from the nose to discover, so take your time and enjoy it. This is a fun one, just give it some time to breathe.

It ends dry and very long on the mouth-watering, lip-smacking, very satisfying finish and it was just as good on day 2. This is wonderful with red sauces and Italian foods. We put it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.
