Made very much in the Northern Rhone style with 2% Viognier and 35% of the Syrah whole cluster fermented, this delicious wine spends 16 months in French oak (20% new).

2020 Kivelstadt Cellars The Inheritance Estate Syrah
Kivelstadt Estate Vineyard, Sonoma Valley AVA
98% Syrah, 2% Viognier
252 Cases ProducedThe Kivelstadt Vineyard is located 4.5 miles northwest of the small town of Glen Ellen on Goulding cobbly clay loam. This shallow and well-drained soil is formed from weathered metavolcanic material. Rock outcroppings are all over the vineyard, this unique shallow soil is a trademark of many of the greatest vineyards in the world. The drainage enables us to ensure the perfect amount of water stress, which forces vines produce the best grapes possible. The parent material provides distinct micronutrients for uptake by the thriving vines. The vineyard ranges in slope from 5-15% and faces south, this is similar to the famous Syrah producing vineyards of Cote Rotie. This soil type is unique to Glen Ellen and the combination of soil type and aspect make this a one of a kind vineyard that we love to work with vintage after vintage.
WINEMAKING: The grapes are harvested overnight to maintain a cold temperature upon arrival at the winery. 35% of the Syrah grapes went into an open top fermenter whole cluster and the rest was de- stemmed. We also destem and add the Viognier picked the same day to bring out the aromatic complexity of traditional Croze Hermitage blends. Tank temperature is capped at 85F and the fermentation moved forward without the addition of yeast. The wine is pressed after 12 days of fermentation with minimal pump overs. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak and 80% neutral French oak for 16 months prior to bottling unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: Initial aroma of black berry punctuated by fresh thyme, resin, pepper & leathery earth tones. There is an ethereal quality to the floral components, which induce thoughts of delicate white flowers (lily) & earthy Truffle. The palate has rich sweet flavors on entry which pull through medium + well integrated tannins. Pays homage to traditional Syrahs of Cote Rotie with the underlying power and richness of California weather.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 Kivelstadt Cellars The Inheritance Estate Syrah opens with some wonderful, very Northern Rhone like meaty notes, blackberry, leather, spice, dried herbs, black pepper, a touch of black olive and more. It’s a very attractive start!
Tasting the wine reveals a smooth, substantial mouthfeel with nice depth and structure and all the same wonderful flavors as the nose. It’s even a bit richer and juicier after it has a little time to open up so don’t be afraid to let it breathe.
It ends dry, quite long and a bit juicy and grippy on the very satisfying finish which was even a bit longer on day 2. This is excellent!
