Who we are: Ocelli (ah-sell-eye) Cellars is the realization of the dream of John & Sirpa Peacock, born out of a shared passion for food and wine. Why Grenache? The complexity and nuance of the variety is immense, and there is a great variation of style. Grenache can be delicate and pretty, elegant and rich, or more structured and intense, and this range of styles lends to the variety to being a great one to create and build a brand portfolio with. As far as we know, we are the only winery in the Northwest focused solely on Grenache. Our goal is to take a look at the various vineyards across the area producing Grenache and give them a touch of dedication and focus and make 100% Grenache from each of the sites we can. All of our red wine is fermented and aged the same to try and showcase the nuances of each vineyard.
And this is a spare no expense example of the variety that is not only single vineyard, but also comes from a specific block completely planted to Clone 3 Grenache in the acclaimed French Creek Vineyard in the Columbia Valley of Washington State.
The wine undergoes 50% whole cluster fermentation and is then aged 20 months in neutral French oak barrels. Only a miniscule 75 cases were produced!
Wine Enthusiast rates it at 91 points, but we put it even a bit higher, scoring it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).

2019 Ocelli Cellars Grenache, French Creek Vineyard, Block 11, Columbia Valley
French Creek vineyard is a gentle sloping south facing hill with soils of wind blown loess with a thin layer of caliche sitting on top of fractured basalt. Block 11 is all grenache clone 3, which was originally imported into the US in the 1880s for a University of California test vineyard. This is also the clone of grenache that many of the vineyards in Washington have planted.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Ocelli French Creek Vineyard Block 11 Grenache opens with pleasing notes raspberry and strawberry plus some dark berry fruit with licorice, a little baking spice, some floral notes, white pepper a touch of blood orange and more. It’s a wonderful, aromatic and harmonious start.
The wine tastes smooth with juicy fruit similar to the nose that is a bit more tart in mouth. It also offers all the other same touches as the nose with good depth and acidity. This is a bigger, darker, more structured version of Grenache than many, and it is just lovely!
It ends dry, smooth and a bit grippy on the very long and lingering finish. It was even a bit better on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points. Get it while you can!
