Big, delicious and surprisingly authentic, this Nero d’Avola comes from estate vineyards in the High Valley AVA of Lake County, which is known for volcanic soils and high elevations. That sounds a lot like the area around Mt Etna in Sicily which produces some unique, big and structured examples of this grape variety!

Summer 2026 Shipping Info
Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order, no matter how many packs you buy. This applies to both Summer Shipments AND Summer Holds. Summer Shipments also have an additional charge built into the product price for the heat protection package. Here’s how it works:
Summer Ship (+$8 for the Heat Protection Package) – Packages ship in styrofoam and use refrigerated shipping. This includes refrigerated trucks to local hubs for the South, Midwest and East Coast and internal refrigeration (ice packs) in boxes for the West Coast (AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR, WA). Final delivery will be on regular UPS trucks without refrigeration (just like last year), thus the reason for the styrofoam.
Note that unlike last year, packages will not go 2-day air as the refrigerated trucks are a better option, however this will add additional transit time. Trucks will only pick up from our shipper once per week so with our normal order processing time of up to 10 days before orders are sent out, packages will likely take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to arrive in-home.
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held in a temperature controlled warehouse for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

2020 Ovis Nero d’Avola
Tasting Notes: The 2020 Ovis Nero d’Avola is a complex wine that balanced aromatics, mouthfeel, and acidity. The tannins pair great with stews, slow cooked meats, as well as cheese boards. The bright acidity brings a freshness that refreshes the palate between each bite or sip. Aromas of black cherry, plum, tobacco, and radiate the glass. This wine can be enjoyed now, or anytime in the next five years. Best served at room temperature.
Winemaker Notes: Nero d’Avola is a lesser known grape that we have decided to showcase due to its hardy character, beautiful aromatics, and excellent adaption to drier and warmer climates. This grape is native to Sicily, where it is grown in similar volcanic soils to our parcel in Lake County. In the vineyard it requires a lot of specialized hand work for successful outcomes. The choice to plant it was not taken lightly, but we believe our team’s hard work paid off.
Our rocky soil and slope of this block do not capture much rainfall. The vines are planted in an east to west row orientation to shield the fruit from the direct afternoon sunlight. We harvested by hand in mid-September in the early hours of the morning. In the winery it presents similarly to Syrah, but with higher natural acidity. The grapes were fermented on skins until phenolic extraction balances the acidity. We use minimal new oak to preserve the aromatics. This wine was aged 18 months in barrels.
Vintage Notes: The 2020 vintage started out dry and warm. Weeks of 100+ degree weather in early May gave the vines a jump start. The heat held strong until August with a record 116˚ day in July! We started harvest a week earlier than normal, with all white grapes in house and fermenting beautifully by Sept 20th. The temperature cooled down to 80s during the harvest lull and stretched out the hang time on our reds allowing phenolic ripeness of the skins. A welcome cloud cover came on October 10th and allowed the fruit to dehydrate and get more hang time. Tonnages ended up lighter due to low spring rains. We are seeing good color concentration and density in this vintage.

The 2020 Ovis Nero d’Avola opens with a very fragrant and very pleasing aroma full of tart, ripe dark berry fruit, some herbal and floral notes and licorice. It’s a savory start.
It just takes one sip to realize that this is a surprisingly good and authentic example of the variety. It’s unmistakably Nero d’Avola from the first sip. Why don’t they plant more of this in California?
This still young wine features plenty of tannins, plenty of acidity and plenty of juicy, tart fruit plus lots of dried herbal notes throughout. The oak adds a savory, spicy dimension as well and helps to tame all that wonderful fruit. This is a big, serious, flavorful wine with lots of deep flavors that will take your pizza or really anything in red sauce, to the next level.
It ends dry, grippy, juicy and savory on the mouthwatering and very long finish. And it was even better on day 2. This is lovely! As we mentioned, however, it is still rather young so be sure to give it plenty of time to breathe if you open it soon. Enjoy.
