What a wonderful contrast between these two excellent Chardonnay!
Today’s deal gets you two bottles of the 2018 Pellegrini Olivet Lane Vineyard Unoaked Chardonnay plus two bottles of the 2018 Pellegrini Olivet Lane Vineyard Oaked Chardonnay. The latter spent 21 months in French oak (31% new) and normally retails for $65 a bottle. It also received 93 points from Wine Enthusiast (we score it similarly).
The Unoaked version was aged in stainless steel and normally retails for $50 a bottle. It doesn’t have any outside scores but we like it even a bit better than the Oaked version, giving it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points)!
These are top notch wines made by the Pellegrini family, who have a long history in the wine business and in Sonoma specifically:
In 1915, Nello Pellegrini immigrated from Italy, eventually landing in the Santa Rosa Plains, a sister city to his home town of Lucca, Tuscany. In 1925, the first Pellegrini wine was made from Sonoma County grapes in a gravity run winery in San Francisco. Upon the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, they were issued Winegrower License No. 4.
They were also one of the pioneers of the Russian River Valley, buying the land for the Olivet Lane Vineyard in 1973 well before the AVA was created in 1983:
The Olivet Lane Vineyard, named for the mature olive trees lining the entrance, was faithfully tended by Robert Pellegrini for over 40 years. Originally an apple and plum orchard, the 70-acre property on West Olivet Road in Santa Rosa was purchased by the Pellegrini family in 1973. This prime Russian River Valley property was converted to vineyard in 1975 with the planting of Pinot noir and Chardonnay. It is now expertly managed by 4th generation, Alexia Pellegrini. Approximately two-thirds of the vineyard’s 58 planted acres are dedicated to the Wente selection of Chardonnay.
The Olivet Lane Vineyard is situated in the heart of the Russian River Valley’s low-lying Laguna de Santa Rosa Plain region, distinguished by the maritime fog influence sweeping up from the Pacific through the Petaluma Gap to the South. Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order, no matter how many packs you buy. This applies to both Summer Shipments AND Summer Holds. Summer Shipments also have an additional charge built into the product price for the heat protection package. Here’s how it works:
Summer Ship (+$8 for the Heat Protection Package) – Packages ship in styrofoam and use refrigerated shipping. This includes refrigerated trucks to local hubs for the South, Midwest and East Coast and internal refrigeration (ice packs) in boxes for the West Coast. Final delivery will be on regular UPS trucks without refrigeration (just like last year), thus the reason for the styrofoam.
Note that unlike last year, packages will not go 2-day air as the refrigerated trucks are a better option, however this will add additional transit time. Trucks will only pick up from our shipper once per week so with our normal order processing time of up to 10 days before orders are sent out, packages will likely take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to arrive in-home.
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held in a temperature controlled warehouse for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Estate GrownTasting Notes: Only our second release of this limited production, the 2018 Olivet Lane Vineyard Unoaked Chardonnay exemplifies pure, unadulterated Chardonnay. Coriander seeds, lemon zest, persimmon, and candied ginger fill the bouquet. An abundance of minerality in the mouth is accompanied by Pink Lady apples, kiwi, tangerine, Ruby Red grapefruit and subtle hints of fresh thyme. Drink this wine soon to enjoy its youthful exuberance or lay it down to allow nuttier secondary flavors to develop.
Food Pairing Notes: Spring rolls with satay sauce, ceviche, roasted chicken, cauliflower gratin. This wine is an absolute chameleon, pairing great with a multitude of bright foods.

The 2018 Pellegrini Olivet Lane Vineyard Unoaked Chardonnay opens with an inviting, intoxicatingly harmonious aroma of lemon zest, touches of tropical fruits, ginger, honeysuckle and other floral notes plus some apple, nutty notes and even a bit of minerality. There’s lots going on here and it’s a wonderful start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to still be fresh and very tasty with a rich, juicy and smooth mouthfeel, similar flavors to the nose and tons of depth and harmony. This has aged wonderfully and isn’t likely to get any better at this point, so enjoy over the next year or so.
It ends dry, rich, juicy, a bit tangy and very long. What a lovely Chardonnay! We’re at a very high 9 Taste Rating drinking it by itself but it’s excellent food flexibility pushes this one up to a 10 for us.

Estate GrownHand-crafted to perfection, our Olivet Lane Chardonnay involves modern-day winemaking techniques that capture the distinct characteristics of our historic estate vineyard.
Tasting Notes: Truly a bounty of complexity, the 2018 Olivet Lane Chardonnay jumps into the nose with lemon verbena, pear, sage, nutmeg, nutmeg, and toasted coconut. Upon the first sip, pralines, caramel, baked apples, and star anise ring in symphony with the bright acid, conveying lemon curd, granny smith apple, and white peach.
Winemaker Notes: 2018 proved to be a very challenging vintage, but rewarding flavors awaited those who were patient. A cool late summer and fall delayed ripening, and late September rain, left many scrambling to pick their fruit early. But no more rain came until just before Thanksgiving, allowing additional hangtime to further develop flavors. This Chardonnay was split into three distinct fermentation lots, utilizing a selection of different yeasts to create layers of flavors and aromas. Bottling for this lot was delayed due to Covid 19, therefore adding an additional 4 months to its age time, which further developed barrel-driven characteristics and lengthened the finish of this Chardonnay.
Food Pairing Notes: Crepes Savoyarde, also great with medium soft cheese and quince paste.

The 2018 Pellegrini Olivet Lane Vineyard Oaked Chardonnay opens with a very pleasing aroma of pear, lemon, apple, nutmeg, some light buttery and floral notes plus touches of toasty oak, vanilla and even a bit of minerality. It’s a great start!
Tasting the wine reveals it to be lush, rich, smooth and creamy with good depth and balance and similar flavors to the nose. It’s really excellent and quite harmonious with the extra bottle age on it, but I wouldn’t let this one age too much longer either.
It ends dry, very long and lip-smacking on the dynamic finish. We rate this as a high 9 Taste Rating (93 points).
