We’re back with one final wine (for now) from Eric Solomon and winemaker Marcelo Retamal (Reta) – and we might have saved the best for last.
It’s an amazingly beautiful Burgundian inspired Chardonnay that spends 24 months in 228L French oak barrels (3rd and 4th fill). We easily gave it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ Points). It also has a long line of massive scores:

It comes from a very special vineyard:
Quebrada Seca, planted in 1993, is the oldest Chardonnay vineyard in Limarí. Situated on the 4th terrace above the river, this is a dry site with 50-100mm of rainfall per year. As a result, Quebrada Seca has dwindled significantly over the years to those parcels exposed to the camanchaca – a dewy mist from the ocean that settles over the vineyard in summer. In addition to providing moisture, this marine layer also moderates the temperature of Quebrada Seca, allowing for a Chardonnay with minerality and finesse melded with the weight and depth of the older, ungrafted massale selection vines.
The vineyard is dry-farmed without chemical inputs. Working the soils is done by horsepower and timed to prevent moisture loss. Harvest is manual, and the fruit is either pressed whole cluster or partially destemmed. Fermentations are spontaneous, and SO2 is only added to the wines after malo has finished or just before bottling. These are some of the most strikingly pure and defy wines we’ve tasted from Chile that demonstrate their Burgundian inspiration while representing the best Chile can offer.

2020 Reta Quebrada Seca
APPELLATION: Limarí Valley

WINEMAKER: Marcelo RetamalVINEYARD: The Quebrada Seca vineyard is located in the Limari Valley, 400 km north of Santiago, on a flat alluvial terrace, 25 km from the Pacific Ocean, at around 230 metres above sea level. The soils have sedimentary layers: large pebbles give good drainage and are embedded in water holding clay and limestone. The climate is semi-arid with just 50-100mm of rain each winter, but is cooled by coastal winds and mist that travel up transverse valleys from the ocean. The vineyard was planted in 1993, it’s the oldest Chardonnay vineyard in Limari planted in double guyot trellises, with masal selection and ungrafted. Rows facing east-west following the line of the sun and shading them.
VITICULTURE: All vineyard work is by hand, no herbicides are used and weeds are controlled mechanically.
WINEMAKING: The grapes are hand harvested and direct pressed as whole clusters into 3rd and 4 th use 228 litre Burgundy barrels. Fermentation is with native yeasts in barrel. The wine spends 24 months in barrel before bottling without fining or filtration.
TASTING NOTE: A delicious textural wine, with a flinty and smoky nose and with fresh acidity. A nice balance of grapefruit, lemon peel, a chalkiness and long, concentrated, focused finish. It should age beautifully.

The 2020 Reta Quebrada Seca Chardonnay opens with fresh, inviting aromas of lemon and other citrus, a little grapefruit, some sea salt minerality, touches of arugula and some herbal notes, a hint of butterscotch and a nutty note. There is so much going on here and it’s all really lovely!
It tastes just like it smells which is an amazing thing! Smooth, deep and balanced the wine features juicy acidity and touches of spice in the mouth as well.
It ends dry, juicy, a bit tangy and very, very long and lingering on the lip-smacking finish. This one just keeps on building long after you swallow, it’s really impressive.
