SALT OF THE EARTH PROJECT, Salz der Erde Riesling
A few years ago, our friend and colleague Ben Henshaw shared news about a new project called Salt of the Earth in Rias-Baixas. Ben, the owner of Indigo Wines UK, collaborates with experts like Eulogio Pomares, Jamie Goode, and Daniel Primack for this venture. The team’s impressive lineup of talent and experience caught our attention, prompting us to commit to purchasing Salt of the Earth even before trying it.
Sal da Terra Albarino was the first wine produced and its success inspired them to do more. On their mission for another grape that offers a true reflection of its terroir, a Riesling seemed like the next logical step. Roping in Theresa from top Rheingau estate Georg Breuer for help, ‘Salz der Erde’ was produced, with creative influence from Ben, Jamie and Daniel.
Grapes are sourced from cool, south-west facing sites around the village of Lorch – the westernmost village in Rheinghau. The two vineyards – Krone and Kapellenberg – are at slightly different altitudes, Krone has slatey soils, while Kapellenberg soils are more quartzite. The parcels are vinified separately in stainless steel and neutral German oak, before blending and aging for ten months on lees in barrel. This is a crisp, laser-cut Riesling with lemony acidity and stony minerality that work together in perfect synergy.

2022 Salz der Erde Rheingau Riesling
This German Riesling, sourced from two sites with different terroirs in Lorsch, showcases the synergy between Kapellenberg’s quartzite-rich slate soils and Krone’s pure slate soils. Salz der Erde is a unique example, demonstrating how two sites can complement each other to produce something greater than the sum of their parts.
Sixty percent is from an elevated site in the quartzite-rich slate soils of Kapellenberg, vinified in stainless steel. This provides a mineral, stony, and salty structure to the wine. Forty percent is from Krone, a warmer site with pure slate soils. Krone is vinified in an oak fuder (large barrels). It’s a racy, dry Riesling packed full of pithy citrus fruits, with wonderful textural balance that makes it inviting and very drinkable.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Salz der Erde Rheingau Riesling opens with a very pleasing aroma of citrus, lots of succulent lemon and lime and a little sea salt minerality. It’s a great start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be rich, vibrant and layered with lots of luscious fruit and great acidity. It features similar flavors to the nose that are quite harmonious and delicious when tasting. The combination of these two vineyards really does work well and adds complexity to the wine.
It ends crisp, dry, rich, and quite long on the lip-smacking, highly satisfying finish! A nice touch of saltiness (just as the name suggests) lingers wonderfully under the lasting tart lemon fruit. I love it!
