- Next is one bottle of the $45 2021 Desert Wind Carménère, a variety that is not normally found outside of its first home in Bordeaux and its second home in Chile. As I said when we offered the 2019 vintage of this wine, this might just be the best example of Carménère I’ve ever tried from any country! 100% Carmenere, this wine also spent 20 months in new and neutral oak and just 250 cases were produced. We give it a high 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).
- And finally the last bottle in today’s 3-pack is another favorite variety from Washington State, the $45 2021 Desert Wind Cabernet Franc. It comes from the winery’s estate Wahluke Slope vineyard, just like the other two wines, and also spends 20 months in new and neutral oak. Deep, dark, delicious, structured and balanced, this is a fantastic example of Cabernet Franc with 17% Syrah. Just 250 cases were produced. We also give it a high 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).

Summer 2026 Shipping Info
Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order, no matter how many packs you buy. This applies to both Summer Shipments AND Summer Holds. Summer Shipments also have an additional charge built into the product price for the heat protection package. Here’s how it works:
Summer Ship (+$8 for the Heat Protection Package) – Packages ship in styrofoam and use refrigerated shipping. This includes refrigerated trucks to local hubs for the South, Midwest and East Coast and internal refrigeration (ice packs) in boxes for the West Coast (AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR, WA). Final delivery will be on regular UPS trucks without refrigeration (just like last year), thus the reason for the styrofoam.
Note that unlike last year, packages will not go 2-day air as the refrigerated trucks are a better option, however this will add additional transit time. Trucks will only pick up from our shipper once per week so with our normal order processing time of up to 10 days before orders are sent out, packages will likely take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to arrive in-home.
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held in a temperature controlled warehouse for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).
Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. Please read this post for important info to determine if the Summer Hold program is right for you.

2021 Desert Wind Syrah
WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2021 growing season was one of the warmest we’ve had in recent years. With close to 40 days over 100 degrees and very little rainfall all summer, it was certainly a difficult year for grapes. Yields were down between 10-30% in most areas, but what we did get was unmatched in quality. We ended the harvest about two weeks sooner than average due to the high temperatures, and overall, our first harvest under new ownership and with our new winemaking team went by smoothly. We are so pleased with the direction Desert Wind is heading, with an increase in quality, value, and varietal and terroir expression that is evident with the 2021 vintage and beyond. The 2021 Syrah has a portion of Malbec blended in to compliment the dark fruit and savory characteristics of the Syrah. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel and aged in new and neutral oak.
VINEYARD NOTES: The Wahluke Slope AVA is located in south-central Washington and is considered one of the warmer regions in the state. Our 480 acre Desert Wind Estate Vineyard is southfacing, with a gradual two percent slope ranging from 800 to 1,000 feet in elevation. The deep, rocky soil allows for excellent drainage, stressing the vines and allowing focused energy on fruit production. The resulting wines are highly pigmented and have excellent tannin structure.
TASTING NOTES: Dark red. Black licorice, dark cherry, blackberry purée, mocha, black pepper, and olive tapenade. The mouthfeel is mediumbodied with lots of dark fruit, great sweetness, and savory tones. The wine shows beautiful volume and texture and finishes with perfect acidity and remarkable length. Drink now or in the next 10 years.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Desert Wind Syrah opens with a classic Syrah aroma of black cherry, blackberry, a bit of peppered bacon, touches of spice and olives. It’s a fabulous start especially after a couple hours of air.
Taking a sip reveals this to be a serious Syrah with great depth and complexity! The wine tastes smooth and lush and is filled with very juicy dark fruit plus all the same notes as the nose. It also features lots of sweet tasting fruit despite being a dry wine.
It ends dry, very long and lasting on the savory, juicy finish and was just as good on day 2. Lovely! What a wonderful example of Washington State Syrah.

2021 Desert Wind Carmenere
WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2021 Carménère is the first 100% varietal Carménère we’ve done at Desert Wind. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel and aged in new and neutral oak.
TASTING NOTES: A flagship variety in Chile, our 2021 Carménère showcases lots of purity and a beautiful combination of sweet red fruit and varietal green aromas. Raspberry sauce, fresh cut cherries, green peppercorn, and wet stone to begin; swirling brings riper red and dark fruits, with hints of menthol and sweet bell pepper. The palate is remarkably soft and round, with very fine tannins and a creamy, almost buttery texture. With intense sweet and savory flavors, the wine finishes extremely long, with the perfect amount of sweetness, lingering acidity, and a beautiful mineral touch. A classic Desert Wind wine that you can drink now or in the next 10 years.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Desert Wind Carmenere opens with a pleasing aroma of plum, blackberry and black cherry with lovely green and red pepper notes plus cinnamon and some other baking spice. It’s very distinctively Carménère and very attractive.
The wine tastes very smooth with similar flavors to the nose and great balance. It also has some lovely, light green pepper touches so common to the variety that add to the wine instead of overwhelming like so many other examples. In fact, just like the 2019 vintage we previously offered, this is one of the best examples of Carménère I’ve tried from any country and it’s from Washington State no less. Who knew?
It ends dry, smooth and long. This is extremely impressive and might be even a bit better on day 2. What a find! We put it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.

WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2021 Cabernet Franc has a portion of Syrah blended in to compliment the dark fruit of the Cabernet Franc. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel and aged in new and neutral oak.
TASTING NOTES: Ripe black cherry, vanilla, cedarwood, and hints of sage. Swirling brings raspberry jam, menthol, and cacao. The palate is light to medium bodied, with great sweetness and lifted acidity. Tart red cherry and citrus skin dominate the midpalate. Juicy and delicious, the wine finishes long with a savory touch. Drink now or in the next 5 years.

The 2021 Desert Wind Cabernet Franc opens with an inviting aroma of black cherry, cedar and vanilla plus touches of dark chocolate, licorice, dried herbs and more. It does need a little time to open but once it does, there’s a whole lot going on!
Tasting reveals a really nice example of Cabernet Franc. There are no green notes common to under-ripe versions of the variety, just a deep, dark and delicious wine. It features good balance, acidity, and structure with similar flavors to the nose plus some added juicy blood orange notes. It’s also quite smooth with firm but soft tannins.
It ends dry, juicy, grippy and a bit savory on the long finish and was just as good on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points). What a trio of wines!
