The wine is made from 100% Mourvedre but Trinitas has chosen to use the grape’s Portuguese name (Mataro) since the vineyard is farmed by the Gonsalves family, third generation growers of Portuguese descent.
And what a vineyard it is, with the grapes for this wine coming from the dry-farmed, 90+ year old vines in Contra Costa County, California. The wine spends 12 months in once used American oak and just a few hundred cases were produced.

From the winery:
The 2017 Mataro oozes with ripe and juicy fruit. The nose opens with a rich bouquet of decadent strawberry, candied red fruit, marshmallow, and baking spices. All of this leads to a dense, but remarkably weightless palate, that is brimming with flavors of strawberry preserves, red licorice, pepper, and Chinese five spice. This is a powerhouse wine in its prime, that has incredible purity of fruit, and seamless texture. Delicious.
Winemaking Notes: This Mataro was cold soaked for five days, then went through primary fermentation with two daily pump overs to dryness. Only the free run juice was extracted and barreled down to once-used American oak from our Chardonnay program. The wine was aged in barrel for 12 months with no racking to maintain bright fruit and to preserve the soft and supple tannins.

And now on to our review:
The 2017 Trinitas Old Vine Mataro begins with a very enticing aroma full of deep dark fruit, anise, cedar and other spice plus touches of vanilla, toffee, chocolate, forest floor and some wintergreen/minty notes. A bit raisiny and Port-like on the nose, it fits the Portuguese use of the grape name well. It even smells big.
Tasting the wine reveals rich, decadent fruit flavors filled with lovely spice and more touches of vanilla, toffee and chocolate. Smooth and delicious, this is a full-bodied wine with loads of structure and lots of dark fruit. It also has a lot of alcohol but handles it very well. This is perfect for those cold winter’s nights we are right in the middle of, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
The wine ends with plenty of firm, grippy tannins on the very long, dry, satisfying finish. It was even a bit better on day 2. Great on its own, it will also go wonderfully with lots of foods including braised short ribs or even with a cigar. Old vines for the win!
