Often named as the best Sangiovese in California (and with the scores and medals to back it up) the winery was started in 1985 with clonal selections from Italy. In fact, Insider Deal All-Star Scott Harvey was even the winemaker for 7 of the first 9 vintages and the wine is now made by Rusty Folena who trained and mentored under Scott:
Among the pioneers who introduced Sangiovese to the New World, the Gullett family set out in 1985 with the singular goal of making Vino Noceto California’s premiere Sangiovese producer. They are now renowned for making “California’s Best Sangiovese.” From just three producing acres and 110 cases in their inaugural 1990 vintage, they now farm over 25 acres and produce 10,000 cases per year, including ten different Sangiovese.
In today’s 3-pack you get a chance to sample both the 31st vintage of the “Originale” Sangiovese (2 bottles) and the very small production Riserva (1 bottle). Here’s some more info about each.
- The 2020 Vino Noceto Sangiovese Originale is the estate’s flagship wine, made up of 98% Sangiovese and 2% Canaiolo Nero. The wine is modeled after Old World Chianti and is aged in French oak puncheons. It has an impressive list of awards and scores including 95-points and a Gold Medal from the California State Fair as well as a Double Gold Medal from the Amador County Fair and Gold Medals from Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition and the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (to name just a few). We give it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points). It normally retails for a quite reasonable $29 a bottle. You will receive two bottles in today’s 3-pack.
- The 2020 Vino Noceto Riserva Sangiovese is 100% Sangiovese Grosso from the best estate lots of two different Brunello clones. The wine is aged for 20 months in French oak puncheons (40% new). Just 540 cases were produced. The wine won a Gold Medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition and received 93-Points from Planet Grape and 92-Points from Wine Enthusiast. We give it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points). It normally retails for $39 a bottle. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.

Up first, let’s take a look at the 2020 Vino Noceto Sangiovese. You will receive two bottles in today’s 3-pack.
From the winery:
Noceto’s flagship Sangiovese is modeled after an Old World Tuscan Chianti-medium bodied, beautiful acidity, fruit-packed, easy-drinking, well-balanced, and extremely versatile with food. This wine is widely regarded as “the best Sangiovese in California.” (Dan Berger, Darrell Corti, Mike Dunne, Elaine Taylor). 2020 marks Noceto’s 31st vintage.
VINEYARDS: Grapes are from 14 separate lots-98% from five clonal Sangiovese selections and 2% Canaiolo Nero. Made with 100% Estate vines, including cuttings sourced from Isole e Olena (47%) in Chianti as well as Il Poggione (31%), Altesino (12%), and Biondi Santi (3%) in Montalcino. Each lot is harvested and fermented separately prior to selective blending.
WINEMAKING: The fruit is cold-soaked 1-2 days, then fermented in stainless steel, bins, and French oak for 7-10 days at 70°-85° Fahrenheit to preserve bright varietal characteristics. The wine ages in 130-gallon, predominantly French oak puncheons to soften youthful tannins.
THE WINE: The 2020 Noceto Sangiovese is ripe and bright, with cherry fruit at its center and a lingering palate. Secondary flavors include cassis, cranberry, rich plum, peppery spice, and light oak. Exceptionally food friendly: Pair with red sauces, spicy ethnic foods, and light meats.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 Vino Noceto Sangiovese opens with a very pleasing aroma of red and black cherry, a bit on the tart side, plus leather, cedar, vanilla, baking spice, licorice and more. It’s a great, classic Sangiovese start.
Taking a sip reveals the wine to be smooth, quite well balanced and very tasty. It features similar flavors to the nose with bright and juicy fruit. This is just a pleasure to drink and just like the best Sangiovese it is very food friendly too.
It ends dry, very long and a bit spicy, a bit savory and a bit grippy. This is an excellent example of Sangiovese regardless of where it’s from and it was even better on day 2. I love it!
Next, let’s take a look at the 2020 Vino Noceto Riserva Sangiovese. You will receive one bottle in today’s 3-pack.
From the winery:
Noceto’s Brunello-style Riserva Sangiovese is blended from the best estate lots and displays superior fruit while retaining balance. Fruit-packed, full-flavored, and complex with a lingering finish.
VINEYARDS: 100% estate Sangiovese Grosso from two different Brunello clones (cuttings sourced from Il Poggione and Biondi Santi vineyards). Each component is harvested and fermented separately prior to selective blending.
WINEMAKING: The fruit is gently crushed and cold-soaked for 1 to 2 days, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks, bins, and new 103-gallon French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 20 months in 130-gallon French oak puncheons, 40% new, to soften youthful tannins and gently age the wine.
THE WINE: The 2020 Riserva Sangiovese delivers fruit-packed flavor, including dried cranberries, pomegranate, and cherry. Displays multi-faceted, earthy complexity while retaining balance and fruitiness that’s complemented by a lingering finish. Food friendly: pair with grilled or roasted meats and rich pasta dishes.

The 2020 Vino Noceto Sangiovese Riserva opens with very harmonious aromas of black cherry, baking spice, a little leather and licorice and a touch of earthiness. It’s a wonderful start!
Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth and silky with great depth, complexity and balance. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, this is a fantastic example of Sangiovese.
It ends dry, juicy, grippy and very long and was just as good on day 2. I love this!
