Kirkland Signature Gran Reserva Ribera Del Duero Review

This wine has been a bit of a unicorn! We finally review the elusive Kirkland Signature Gran Reserva Ribera Del Duero from Costco.

Kirkland Signature Gran Reserva Ribera Del Duero

100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Spain. The wine has been aged over 5 years, including more than 2 years in French and American oak barrels.

Only produced occasionally and last with the 2018 vintage, we were very happy snag a few bottles of the 2020 vintage at our local Costco the other day.

A look at the back label shows that the wine is made by Vina Solorca whose own wines are generally not very available in the US. The family run winery is located in Roa de Burgos in the center of Ribera del Duero.

From the bottle:

2020 Kirkland Signature Ribera Del Duero Gran Reserva

Kirkland Signature Gran Reserva Ribera del Duero is made with 100% Tempranillo grapes that have been hand-picked and selected from exquisitely cultivated vines. This rich, complex Gran Reserva wine has been aged for a minimum period of five years. It was aged in quality French and American oak barrels for more than two years, completing the aging process resting in the bottle in dark, temperature controlled conditions in the cellar prior to release. Featuring bright, clean aromas, this wine fills the mouth leaving an impression of velvety blackberries and minerals. Kirkland Signature Gran Reserva Ribera del Duero pairs well with salted pork, roasted lamb or beef Wellington.

Produced and Bottled by Vina Solorca
15% Alcohol

The 2020 Kirkland Signature Ribera Del Duero Gran Reserva opens with an enticing, harmonious aroma of black cherry and blackberry plus a little spice, licorice, touches of cigar box, mint and more. There are a lot of layers here to discover. It’s a great start and exactly what you would expect from a Gran Reserva from this area.

Tasting the wine confirms that this is a excellent example of Tempranillo. We love a good Ribera Del Duero and this hits all the marks. It features all the same flavors as the nose along with great balance and structure. It’s a bit chewy but six years of aging have smoothed things out and everything has integrated quite nicely. It has plenty of life ahead of it too.

It ends dry, juicy, very long and quite grippy. Awesome! I’m so glad we finally found it. If you’re lucky enough to see this wine in store, grab at least a couple bottles – one to drink now and one to stash for a couple years to see how it develops.

The wine was just as good on day 2 after simply being left corked on the counter. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.
