We check out the latest vintage of the Kirkland Signature Toscana from Costco.
Predominately Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy.
The Kirkland Signature Toscana is available exclusively at Costco and now retails for $12.99 (down $2 from last year). Just like the previous vintages, the wine is made by Alexander Van Beek of the well-known Caiarossa winery whose own Super Tuscans retail for well over $20. It is imported by Misa Imports.

From the bottle:
Kirkland Signature Toscana is a fresh and delicate red wine that shows flavors of wild herb, ripe cherry and raspberry. This elegant wine is supported by firm tannins and a velvety smooth finish.
“The truest natural expression of the Tuscan energy.”

Today we have a style of wine that we absolutely love, the Super Tuscan. The IGT Toscana label gives winemakers the creative capacity to create blends that don’t need to fall within the strict regulations of other Italian regions.
While many of these wines are still dominated by Sangiovese, the ability to add in other varieties as the winemaker sees fit creates some truly classic and unique wines. (Unfortunately Costco doesn’t tell us what other varietals might be in this one.)
We’ve reviewed a number of previous vintages of the Kirkland Signature Toscana and found them to always be at least solid and sometimes sensational. The 2020 was quite nice, earning a Bulk Buy rating, while the 2021, though still respectable, was not quite up to that level. The 2022 returned to the form of the 2020 once again receiving a Bulk Buy rating.

Let’s check out the 2023!
The 2023 Kirkland Signature Toscana begins with an enticing aroma of black cherry, licorice, baking spice, vanilla, cedar and some dried herbs.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth wine with black cherry, lots of licorice and oaky baking spice along with touches of chocolate, tobacco and anise. It needs a lot of time to breathe.
It ends dry, very long a bit grippy with lasting oaky notes and was a bit better on day 2 so don’t be afraid to give it time to breathe.
Overall, this is a definite step down from the 2022, and more in line with the 2021. Thanks to its lower price, however, it’s still quite respectable and manages to garner a Highly Recommended rating.

And here’s our review of the 2022 vintage:
The 2022 Kirkland Signature Toscana begins with a harmonious and enticing aroma of black cherry, baking spice, vanilla, cedar and some dried herbs.
It only takes one sip to know this is really good, back to the level of the 2019 and 2020 vintages. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, it also has good depth and complexity right at pop and pour which is a welcome change from the 2021. (Not that the 2021 was bad, it just needed a lot of time to breathe and even then couldn’t get to a Bulk Buy rating which seemed to be par for the course for this wine for a number of years.)
It ends dry, grippy, a bit juicy, and very, very long and lingering. It was just as good on day 2. This is definitely a step up from the 2021.
