We check out the latest vintage of the Kirkland Signature Toscana from Costco.
The 2019 vintage does not specify the blend but I imagine it is similar to the 2018 which was 75% Sangiovese, 22% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is from Tuscany, Italy.
The Kirkland Signature Toscana is available exclusively at Costco for $13.99. Just like the previous vintages, the wine is made by Alexander Van Beek of the well-known Caiarossa winery whose own Super Tuscans retail for well over $20. It is imported by Misa Imports.
Well, here's a surprise! The last couple of years this wine has been released closer to December. We were quite excited to have spotted it so early and have updated our calendar of Kirkland Signature releases to reflect this going forward.

Estate Bottled & Cellared
The vineyards of this elegant cuvée overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea from the Tuscan coast. The harmony between soils and vines makes wine one with nature. A fresh and delicate red wine, showing flavors of wild herb, ripe cherry and raspberry. An elegant wine supported by firm tannins and a velvety smooth finish.

Today we have a style of wine that we absolutely love, the Super Tuscan. The IGT Toscana label gives winemakers the creative capacity to create blends that don't need to fall within the strict regulations of other Italian regions. While many of these wines are still dominated by Sangiovese (like today's example) the ability to add in other varieties as the winemaker sees fit creates some truly classic and unique wines.
We've reviewed a number of previous vintages of this wine and found them to be mostly sensational although the 2018 wasn't quite as good. Let's see if this wine can return to glory with the 2019 vintage!
The 2019 Kirkland Signature Toscana begins with a wonderful, enticing aroma of black cherry, baking spice, vanilla and some dried herbs.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth and tasty wine full of red berries, candied black cherry, licorice and more well-integrated baking spice along with touches of chocolate, tobacco and anise. And while the 2018 was a bit on the simple side, this 2019 offers a return to the great depth and complexity we're accustomed to in this wine.
It ends dry, very long a bit grippy. It's back to a Bulk Buy!
Here's our review of the previous vintage, the 2018.
The 2018 Kirkland Signature Toscana begins with a wonderful, enticing aroma of black cherry, baking spice, vanilla and some dried herbs.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth and tasty wine full of red berries, candied black cherry and more baking spice along with touches of chocolate and anise. It does takes quite awhile to open up but even then we found it to be a bit more simple and lacking some depth of the previous vintages.
It ends dry, long a bit grippy. While it doesn't reach the Bulk Buy rating of its predecessors this is still a very good value.
