We check out the latest vintage of the Kirkland Signature Toscana from Costco.
Predominately Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy.
The Kirkland Signature Toscana is available exclusively at Costco and still retails for $14.99 (up $1 from last year). Just like the previous vintages, the wine is made by Alexander Van Beek of the well-known Caiarossa winery whose own Super Tuscans retail for well over $20. It is imported by Misa Imports.

From the bottle:
Estate Bottled & Cellared
A fresh and delicate red wine, showing flavors of wild herb, ripe cherry and raspberry. An elegant wine supported by firm tannins and a velvety smooth finish.

Today we have a style of wine that we absolutely love, the Super Tuscan. The IGT Toscana label gives winemakers the creative capacity to create blends that don’t need to fall within the strict regulations of other Italian regions.
While many of these wines are still dominated by Sangiovese, the ability to add in other varieties as the winemaker sees fit creates some truly classic and unique wines. (Unfortunately Costco doesn’t tell us what other varietals might be in this one.)
We’ve reviewed a number of previous vintages of the Kirkland Signature Toscana and found them to always be at least solid and sometimes sensational. The 2020 was quite nice, earning a Bulk Buy rating, while the 2021, though still respectable, was not quite up to that level.
Let’s check out the 2022!
The 2022 Kirkland Signature Toscana begins with a harmonious and enticing aroma of black cherry, baking spice, vanilla, cedar and some dried herbs.
It only takes one sip to know this is really good, back to the level of the 2019 and 2020 vintages. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, it also has good depth and complexity right at pop and pour which is a welcome change from the 2021. (Not that the 2021 was bad, it just needed a lot of time to breathe and even then couldn’t get to a Bulk Buy rating which seemed to be par for the course for this wine for a number of years.)
It ends dry, grippy, a bit juicy, and very, very long and lingering. It was just as good on day 2. This is definitely a step up from the 2021.

And here’s our review of the 2021 vintage:
The 2021 Kirkland Signature Toscana begins with an enticing aroma of black cherry, baking spice, vanilla, cedar and some dried herbs.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth and tasty wine full of red berries, candied black cherry, licorice and more well-integrated baking spice along with touches of chocolate, tobacco and anise. This vintage is pretty good right out of the bottle although we didn’t think it had quite the depth and complexity of the 2020.
It ends dry, very long a bit grippy and it wasn’t quite as good on day 2 so either drink up or take steps to preserve it. While it’s not a Bulk Buy this year, this wine still offers very good value for the price.
