Impressive value from a little known region in Spain, we review the Magus Dark Garnacha available for just $7 at Costco.
Garnacha from the Extremadura region in southwestern Spain, bordering Portugal. It appears to be a non-vintage bottling as we couldn’t find a vintage designation anywhere on the bottle or the cork.
The Magus Dark Garnacha has an SRP of around $18 but can be found at many Costco locations for just $6.99. It doesn’t appear to be a Costco exclusive but it will likely be hard to find anywhere else. It is imported by Misa Imports
From the bottle:
Magus Dark Garnacha
Wine of the land of ExtremaduraTasting Notes: Intense violet colour with a bluish rim. Intense and round on the palate, fresh and sweet with hints of forest fruits. Long and oily aftertaste; complex retronasal.
Wine Pairing: It goes well with white and red meats, rice, pasta and semi-cured cheeses.
Serving Temp: 15-16C

The Magus Dark Garnacha opens with quite an enticing aroma full of red and black fruits, some garrigue-like herbs and touches of baking spice.
It just takes one sip to know that this is a serious wine. It offers good depth, balance and acidity and even has some complexity to it. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, it also has juicy fruit in the mouth.
It ends dry, quite long and rather dynamic with some lasting light oaky spice. It was similar on day 2. This is pretty impressive for just 7 bucks. Don’t let the unfamiliar region name throw you off, there’s tons of value in this one.
