Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara is where “most Bordeaux varietals planted in Santa Barbara County call home,” according to Decanter. Located on the warmest side of the Santa Ynez Valley, this AVA is known for producing reds with depth, power, and structure.
The name even dates back to Prohibition, when locals would “sneak off to Happy Canyon” for an illicit drink. It was the fourth region in Santa Barbara County to gain AVA status in 2009, and with just over 400 acres of grapes spread across fewer than a dozen vineyards, it’s as exclusive as it is special.
The 2021 Martellotto Sotto Voce Cabernet Franc is a perfect expression of Happy Canyon’s unique terroir. Bold dark berries, red currants, and a touch of tobacco create a wine with both intensity and finesse, all framed by smooth tannins and a long, lingering finish.

Savoury wild herbs, sweet bay leaf and spearmint lead the aromatics, followed by cherry fruit and slivers of dark chocolate. Robust tannins provide good grip, while the acid-driven finish is clean, long, and mouthwatering.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Martellotto Sotto Voce Cabernet Franc opens with aromas of black cherry and ripe blackberry plus a little spice, cedar and cigar box. It’s a nice start, just be sure to give it plenty of air.
The wine tastes smooth and features lots of structure plus similar flavors to the nose with some herbal notes, a touch of black olive and a bit of a meaty note. We also appreciate that it doesn’t have any of the underripe green notes common to this variety. Complex and easy to drink, this is a nice example of the variety.
It ends dry, long and grippy and was even a little better on day 2.

Very smooth red, with a nice warm after taste that doesn't coat the tongue, but hangs around in a great way.
This Cab Franc was very good , very tasty. I would like to order more but it says it’s sold out! Too bad! Yum!
