We check out this popular Zinfandel based red blend, the Marietta Old Vine Red OVR Lot 73.
A multi-vintage blend (thus the lot number instead of a vintage year) of predominantly Zinfandel from California. 60% of the wine is aged in neutral barrels with the other 40% in stainless steel.
Sample submitted for review. The OVR has an SRP of $19 and is available for as low as $12. It is also available at some Costco locations. 20,000 cases were produced.
Old Vine Red is a proprietary red wine made to replicate the field blends of many of the old vineyards across California. Predominantly comprised of Zinfandel, Old Vine Red combines pure fruit, a supple mouth feel and a rich, solid structure. A groundbreaking combination of varietals from multiple vintages, this wine has blazed the path for red blends for decades.

Despite the name, it's not clear if the wine actually includes any grapes at all from old vines. Nevertheless, the most important thing is the taste so let's check it out.
The Marietta Old Vine Red Lot Number 73 opens with aromas of black cherry, some brambly fruit and lots of other interesting touches - licorice, a little earthiness, some almost salty, nutty notes and touched of varied spices just to name a few.
Tasting the wine reveals that this is just a delicious, cohesive joy to drink. It features plenty of depth on the berry fruit, very well integrated spice and good acidity along with great balance and structure. There are lots of other interesting touches as well like licorice, vanilla, chocolate and more that add to the experience.
It ends dry, long, a bit grippy and quite satisfying. This would be great with a cheeseburger. It was just as good on day 2.
