Let’s take a look at the 100% Sangiovese first.

This 100% Sangiovese was produced from fruit grown in two exceptional small plantings in Dry Creek Valley — Teldeschi Vineyard and Spadoni Vineyard.
In the early 1990’s, lifelong grapegrower Ray Teldeschi got Sangiovese budwood from our Norton Ranch on Lytton Springs and planted it on his “Home Ranch” that is next door to our winery on the Dry Creek bench. The southwest exposure and excellent drainage of the site helps the finicky Sangiovese vines fully ripen the grapes every year.
The Spadoni Vineyard is a tiny planting on the hillside behind the home of long time friends Ken and June Spadoni. They planted an acre of Sangiovese on the western edge of Dry Creek because of a love for the wine, and meticulously farm this small plot.
The aromas offer that rustic essence desired in a Sangiovese, with traces of minerality, earth undertones, cherry and cranberry. With the first sip, discover a beautifully balanced wine with an ideal blend of dark flavors, a light essence and bright, mouthwatering acidity. A blend of wild cherry, pomegranate, red plum and dried strawberry fuses with a complex mix of briary sage, tobacco, spicy cedar and toasted herbs. Harmonious and seductive, this wine disappears quickly once it’s opened.
The perfect pairing wine that complements most cuisines from pot stickers to pizza, or a hearty Moroccan beef stew to baked mostaccioli.

The 2018 Peterson Winery Dry Creek Valley Sangiovese begins with a very pleasing aroma of leather, black cherry, spice, licorice and black pepper with a little earth and some savory hints of dried herbs. Yum!
The wine is just as nice in the mouth with all those same flavors combining wonderfully. Featuring juicy, almost sweet fruit, good acidity and great balance and structure, this is a lovely example of Sangiovese from California. It’s especially good after it has an hour or so to open up.
Smooth with fine, round tannins yet still a bit rustic just like a good Sangiovese should be, it ends dry and extremely long with lots of lingering juicy fruit plus licorice and all the other touches from the nose lingering. It’s a simply awesome finish.

And now let’s take a look at the Super Tuscan style Sangiovese.

Tasting Notes: Subtle aromas of earth and minerality mingle with a mix of dark fruit, notes of spicy cedar and traces of eucalyptus. A smooth entry and mouthfeel are staccatoed with just the right amount of spice and mouthwatering acidity, which frame flavors of cherry, plum and a mixture of red and dark berries. The long finish highlights Bing cherry and a hint of dark chocolate amid the luscious acidity.
Production Notes: Each spring, Jamie and I assess the previous vintage of Sangiovese and begin the process of deciding the blend for that year’s Il Granaio. In blending, we are guided by two simple rules—capture the essence of the Sangiovese variety from that vintage, and build on its core characters, to assemble the juiciest, most complex wine possible. The blending varietals and percentages will vary for each vintage. For the 2018 Il Granaio, we combined 25% Bordeaux varietals — Merlot and Cabernet Franc — with 75% Sangiovese from the Teldeschi Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley to achieve the wine that we were seeking. We are pleased with the result, and think you will be, too.
Winemaker Notes: Our Il Granaio Sangiovese began with the 2000 vintage when Jamie convinced me that we could create a Sangiovese blend juicy, spicy and exotic enough for the “Super Tuscan” moniker (Sangiovese blended with non-traditional varieties). The wine quickly developed a following, and we’ve produced the Il Granaio Sangiovese every vintage since.
Food Pairing Notes: This food-friendly wine will pair with everything from steakhouse pasta sprinkled with blue cheese to buttermilk-brined pork chops served with red cabbage slaw.

The 2018 Peterson Winery Il Granaio Dry Creek Valley Super Tuscan Style Sangiovese opens with a wonderful aroma of black cherry and other savory dark fruits, plus lovely spice, cedar and a touch of earthiness.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth mouthfeel, very good structure and great depth. The wine features similar flavors to the nose but they are put together wonderfully in the mouth. With great acidity this wine also has excellent food pairing potential with anything from a cheeseburger to all kinds of Italian fare. And while this wine is excellent right from the first pop and pour, it also really improves with several hours of air and especially on day 2, where it easily reaches a 10 Taste Rating.
It ends dry, juicy and amazingly long and savory on the mouth-watering finish. Did we mention it gets even better with air? Remarkably so. I’d open this one the morning of the day you want to drink it. Cellaring for a few years will be greatly rewarded as well.
