Here’s your chance to try four different Zinfandels representing some of the best of the Dry Creek Valley.
Today’s 4-pack deal gives you the chance to try 3 different single vineyard bottles, including one from the West Vineyard planted in 1902.
But that’s not all – the fourth, Bulk Buy rated bottle is a combination of four vineyards with different soil types and climates meant to reflect the best of the entire Dry Creek Valley.
All four wines are unbelievably delicious and as a whole they offer a fascinating look at how the same variety from the same region and vintage can vary by vineyard.
Not only that but these small batch wines are, of course, made using Peterson Winery’s “zero manipulation” philosophy eschewing additives and letting the true flavors of the grape and the particular vintage shine through. (And since they are not fined or filtered, they are also vegan friendly).

Up first, let's take a look at the 2018 Peterson Winery West Vineyard Tradizionale Zinfandel, which is 97% Zinfandel and a 3% field blend of assorted red (2.5%) and white (0.5%) varieties, all from the West Vineyard planted in 1902.
The wine spends 22 months in barrel, including 25% new Hungarian oak, with the balance in 4-8 year-old neutral barrels. Like almost all of the Peterson's wines, it is enclosed with a screwcap. Normally retailing for $36, just 200 cases were produced.
From the winery:
West Vineyard, planted in 1902, is a dry-farmed, head-trained Zinfandel vineyard located on a hillside in the southeast corner of Dry Creek Valley. A traditional field-blend vineyard; a small portion is planted with 3% other red grapes (Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvedre, Carignane and some others I’m not really sure about), as well as 0.5% white grapes (Semillon, Palomino and Chasselas). All the vines are harvested at the same time and all the varieties are cofermented, which produces a smoother, fuller wine than separate fermentations and subsequent blending can give you.
This is the kind of wine that really got me hooked on Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. A traditional, old-vine field-blend wine with classic “raspberry jam” that differentiates the best Dry Creek Valley Zins from all others. Big, but balanced. Fruity, yet elegant. This is a wine that will go with almost any food, but you can also just pull the cork on a bottle and drink it with friends while playing cards or watching a good movie.
The intensity and depth on the nose and mouth showcase the character and age of these old Zinfandel vines. Deep aromas of spicy red and black berries layer with hints of fine herbs and fresh toffee. The smooth entry flows into a bright mid-palate of ripe blackberry, Santa Rosa plum, Bing cherry and just a kiss of rhubarb pie. Caramel, spices and a hint of floral weave through the buoyant fruit flavors that expand and linger long. Integrated oak and lively acidity provide the perfect structure to support this delicious example of what old vines can deliver.
Try this classic Zin with grilled pork chops with roasted garlic gremolata, or beef-pork-veal meatballs over fresh-made spaghetti.

The 2018 Peterson Winery West Vineyard Tradizionale Zinfandel welcomes with a classic Zin aroma of cherry, licorice, spicy berry, vanilla, wintergreen and much more. It's a great start.
It just takes one sip to know that this is a fantastic example of Zinfandel. Big, balanced, smooth and quite harmonious it features juicy, deep and rich fruit along with excellent complexity. There are also tons of secondary notes to discover both from the old vines and the interesting field blend mix. I love this. And even though the alcohol is a bit high, it carries it very well.
It ends dry and very long on the wonderful finish. This is my kind of Zin!

Up next, we've got the 2018 Peterson Winery Funsten Vineyard Zinfandel which is 100% Zinfandel from Block 4 of the vineyard.
The wine is aged for 22 months in 33% new Hungarian oak and 67% 4-year-old French oak barrels. Like almost all of the Peterson's wines, it is enclosed with a screwcap. Normally retailing for $38, just 3 barrels (75 cases) were produced.
From the winery:
This Zinfandel vineyard, on the eastern bench above the valley floor, is adjacent to our former old red barn winery off Lytton Springs Road. It was planted by my father in 1999 when he was consulting for Ridge Vineyards. I actually helped lay out stakes for a few of the blocks in the vineyard during my summer break from school. I can remember toiling in the hot, dusty soil of the Dry Creek Bench, wondering what the vineyard would become. It’s exciting to get to work with the fruit and wine from this vineyard decades later.
Normally a main component in our Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel blend, the 2018 Funsten Zin tasted so spectacular on its own, we opted to set aside and bottle three barrels of this 100% single vineyard wine to share with our wine club members, and other true Zin lovers.
Deep aromas of plum and blackberry mingle with traces of loamy earth and rich brown spices. The palate’s dark tones reveal ripe strawberry and black cherry infused with black raspberry preserves. Spicy vanillin oak, along with hints of orange zest, red licorice, mocha and green peppercorn, weave into the rich yet balanced flavors that linger on.
An easy wine to pair, this Zin will be perfect with coq au vin, shepherd’s pie or bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin drizzled with a cherry balsamic reduction.

The 2018 Peterson Winery Funsten Vineyard Zinfandel begins a nose of brambly red and black cherry, red licorice, spice, a little cranberry and a nice earthy streak. It's an unmistakably excellent Zinfandel aroma.
The rich and dynamic wine tastes balanced and delicious just like the others. It features a smooth mouthfeel and similar flavors to the nose with the earthy streak continuing. It also has some vanilla and toasty oak notes thanks to those new barrels. And it gets even more harmonious with time to breathe.
It ends dry, long and lingering with lasting, almost sweet fruit along with earth and vanilla notes. It was similar on day two.
I love how you can taste and smell the differences among these Zinfandel vineyards even though they are all from Dry Creek Valley!

And the goodness just keeps on coming! Next, we've got the 2018 Peterson Winery Bernier Zinyard Zinfandel consisting of 91% Zinfandel and 9% Petite Sirah all from the Bernier Zinyard and co-fermented.
The wine spends 22 months in 6-10 year-old neutral barrels. Like almost all of the Peterson's wines, it is enclosed with a screwcap. Normally retailing for $34, just 98 cases were produced.
From the winery:
Why call it a Zinyard? Originally, long time Dry Creek Valley farmers Paul and Yael Bernier planted only Zinfandel on the hillside behind their house on Canyon Road on the northern end of the valley. To honor the traditions of many of the early Italian immigrant growers, as well as enhance the Zinfandel, they later planted a small block of Petite Sirah alongside the Zin, just above the row of peach and pear trees we sometimes enjoy while sampling the vines.
Although the Zinfandel vines were planted in 1990, the Bernier Zinyard makes old-time growers feel they are walking into the past when they stroll among the vines. It is a traditional dry-farmed, head-trained (non-trellised) vineyard with Italo Sbragio’s old clone Zin grafted on to St. George rootstock.
This combination of influences embodies the very roots of Dry Creek Valley viticulture and reflects Peterson Winery’s values of savoring and embracing time-honored, traditional farming.
Aromas of black raspberry and ripe cherry merge with traces of tobacco and loamy earth. The gentle silken entry flows into an expressive mid-palate of black cherry, raspberry, blackberry and dried strawberry. A subtle blend of toasty oak, sweet tobacco and brown spices weaves through the ripe fruit flavors. Hints of sassafras appear as the wine nears the finish and lingers.
Although the flavors seem almost delicate, this Zin perfectly complements chicken tikka masala, and also pairs beautifully with cedar planked salmon with a honey garlic glaze.

The 2018 Peterson Winery Bernier Zinyard Zinfandel opens with an inviting and harmonious aroma of black cherry and peppery spice notes along with tobacco, licorice and more. A touch of rhubarb and some earthiness also come out with time in the glass.
Taking a sip reveals a wine with great depth, character and balance! It features plenty of well-integrated spice throughout, lots of licorice and even a hint of a toasty oak note, which is surprising given the age of these barrels. I love this wine and it went great with our chicken Alfredo.
It ends dry and very long with the return of the sweet tobacco notes from the nose under the lasting spicy fruit. It was very similar on day 2. This is a superb example of Zinfandel.

And finally, as we noted at the top, the 2018 Peterson Winery Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel combines the best of the Dry Creek Valley into one wine. It includes 81% Zinfandel from the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard, the Funsten Vineyard and the West Vineyard plus 9% Petite Sirah from the West and Bradford vineyards, 7% Carignane from the Forchini Vineyard and 3% Grenache from the West Vineyard, all in Dry Creek Valley.
The wine spends 25 months in barrel including 9% new American oak and 13% new Hungarian oak. It is enclosed with a screwcap like most of the winery's wines and 750 cases were produced. It normally retails for $28.
From the winery:
Our 2018 Dry Creek blend is a very classic, claret-style Zinfandel. Accompanying the depth of fruit flavors, you’ll find richness, complexity, spice and earthiness. Compared to our other Zinfandels, this bottling contains the highest percentage of blending varietals to give maximum spice and an intriguing multifaceted quality without overwhelming the inherent “Zinniness” of the wine. The Petite Sirah gives the wine darker earth notes and more structure, while Carignane enhances the spiciness and bright acidity, and Grenache adds a luscious layer of fruit.
Deep, dark and rich aromas and flavors offer the quintessential Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. The nose is filled with spicy blackberry laced with fresh cracked black pepper. The easy entry quickly exposes mouthwatering acidity, along with a delicious blend of ripe cherry, black raspberry and boysenberry. Toasted oak and spicy pepper seamlessly integrate with the luscious flavors, adding depth and balance. This wine offers all the beauty of Zinfandel fruit without any of the jammy, over the top qualities.
A great Zin to pair with everything from pizza and pasta to burgers and ribs. A couple of our favorites are baked sausage and ricotta rigatoni, or braised lamb shanks served over garlic mashed potatoes.

15.5% Alcohol
The 2018 Peterson Winery Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel opens with very pleasing aromas of dark berry fruit, peppercorns and spice plus touches of vanilla, licorice, cola, leather and more.
Tasting the dry, balanced wine reveals it to be loaded with Sweet Tart like fruit flavors! It features plenty of well integrated spice along with licorice and touches of cola, vanilla and chocolate wrapped up in a smooth mouthfeel. I wouldn't have guessed the alcohol at 15.5%, in fact this tastes more like an elegant, refined style of Zin.
It ends dry, very long and juicy and was even a bit better on day 2. This is mouthwatering stuff. What a way to close out this Zintastic 4-pack, don't miss it!
