Phigment Red Blend – Truly Tasty

By: Jon Thorsen Published: January 14, 2020 Last Updated: May 23, 2021

No you're not daydreaming, this is a quality dry red blend from California for just $5.99. The Phigment Red Blend from Trader Joe's.

Phigment Red Blend – Truly Tasty

An undisclosed blend of red varietals from California.

The Phigment Red Blend is vinted and bottled by NOTSO Wine Co. It is available exclusively at Trader Joe's and sells for just $5.99.

    From the bottle:

    It's not your imagination...

Like the patterns of a tapestry, rich flavors and evocative aromas are woven together, creating a dark, velvety texture to experience. The ripe blueberries and plums that stain the glass are no illusion, while pipe tobacco and exotic spice unwrap to reveal a plush and succulent finish.

    13.5% Alcohol

The 2017 Phigment Red Blend begins with a very pleasing aroma of plum, blackberry, vanilla, and lots of assorted spice including some hints of licorice and cinnamon. It smells like a lot more than $5.99.

According to the Fearless Flyer this wine is made for Trader Joe's by "a winery that specializes in preternaturally big, bold reds." We didn't find it be quite as big and bold as they make it out, but it is really delicious and thankfully dry. Tasting shows lots of bright, juicy fruit and wonderfully integrated spice along with a smooth and soft mouthfeel.

While they don't disclose the varietals in the blend there's definitely some Zinfandel in here and I'd guess some Merlot and maybe even a little Barbera as well. It ends dry, long and very satisfying.
