Quarter Cut Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon – Sweet and Oaky

By: Jon Thorsen Last Updated: June 10, 2020

Aldi gets into the bourbon barrel aged game with a nice example for just $10, the Quarter Cut Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon.

Quarter Cut Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon – Sweet and Oaky

Cabernet Sauvignon from California that is aged in bourbon barrels for an unspecified amount of time.

This wine is available for $9.99 exclusively at Aldi.

From the bottle:

Expertly crafted, our Cabernet is gently finished by resting in charred, American whiskey barrels to create depth and flavor, producing a smooth and well-rounded wine.

Aged in bourbon barrels, this California Cabernet Sauvignon draws its rich flavor from charred barrels that once aged American whiskey. Tracing the legacy of distillers, this aging method masterfully balanced the essence of the Cabernet varietal with the unique character imbued by these prized barrels. The reward is a seamless wine with distinctive notes of vanilla, black cherry and dried herbs.

Pairs well with grilled or smoked red meats, pork, lamb and burgers. Best served at room temperature.

14.5% Alcohol

The 2018 Quarter Cut Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon begins just as you would expect, with a rather bourbon barrel-ish aroma full of vanilla, toasty oak and also black cherry.

Taking a sip reveals a smooth Cab full of sweet, dark fruit, tons of vanilla and other oaky notes. If you enjoy the bourbon barrel wines this will probably be right up your alley. If not, it may have too much oak influence for you. To be honest it’s not our favorite style of wine even though it is very popular, but we can review it for what it is, which is a sweet and oaky Cab.

It ends with sweet lingering fruit and tons more barrel notes along with a bit of heat. Overall it’s pretty much just as advertised.
