From the bottle:
Wine made exclusively with Avesso grape variety. It is full-bodied, very smooth and pleasant in the mouth, with flavours of pear and plum.
13% Alcohol
We've explored a lot of wine in our series on Vinho Verde but we haven't touched much on the Avesso variety, which is only found in the Vinho Verde region. Primarily used in blends to give them a fuller body, today we get to sample a varietal example that showcases this grape. Interestingly, the name Avesso means "reverse" because some of the characteristics of this grape (low acidity and high alcohol) are the opposite of what is found in many of the other white grapes in Vinho Verde. Let's give it a try!
The 2015 Quinta de Linhares Avesso from Agri-Roncao Vinicola and winemaker Antonio Sousa begins with a pleasant aroma of pear and apple but it really takes off when tasting. Taking a sip reveals a vibrant and delicious wine with more pear and apple plus a good dose of grapefruit. This medium to full-bodied wine has great depth of flavor and a wonderful, lively mouthfeel. It ends long with plenty of lingering grapefruit and pear flavors. This is a very refreshing, lovely wine and definitely a variety to seek out.
