What a find!
Shippey Vineyards is back with another excellent wine from their hillside vineyard at the base of Bradford Mountain.
Made from 100% Petite Sirah, this big, smooth and tannic wine spends 30 months in French and American oak.
The 2013 we are offering today is just coming into its own now, and has a long drinking life ahead if it. We cranked our Taste Rating all the way up to a 10 after the wine had some time to breathe.
But before we get to the wine, let's learn a bit about the small, family-owned winery behind it:
Welcome to Shippey Vineyards. Our family vineyards are tucked away in the western hills above the Dry Creek Valley and they produce wines like no others. We make big wines in small lots and our story is the 21st Century equivalent of an old tale about farmers making wine in the hills.
We have been growing grapes on our property since we purchased it in 1968 (there was an an old vine field blend vineyard being tended then) and commercially since the 1980's. By then most of the old-vine vineyards had been torn out or replanted, often with other varietals. We decided to go the other way and have planted our vineyards with these most Californian of grapes, the most Dry Creek Valley of grapes, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, partly because historically they’re the right grapes for our vineyard and partly because they make great wines.
Because we are so small (under 1000 cases per year) our wines are limited production individually handcrafted artisanal foods, each with its own distinct character. These are not wines you can find on the shelf of your local supermarket. These are not wines that are made to taste the same year after year and bottle after bottle like the giant wineries make. Our wines are hand crafted small lot wines, each with an individual and distinctive "voice" that speaks to its unique vineyard location, heritage and cultivation.
Surprisingly, given its age and the very small 200 case production, the SRP is quite reasonable at just $32, but we've been able to slash that price even further...

From the winery:
In August of 1972, a large fire swept through the upper Dry Creek Valley. At Shippey Vineyards an old vine field blend vineyard was set ablaze as the fire raced over the thick brush and through the oak trees. The site of the current Flaming J Vineyard was burnt to the ground as the near eighty-year old vines caught fire in the intense heat.
Thirteen years later, this same piece of property was replanted with grapes and named in honor of the vineyard that existed where it is now planted. The Flaming J Petite Sirah is a dark, brooding, inky wine with blueberry and huckleberry flavors, very soft tannins for such an immense wine and stellar aging potential. This is a wine you can drink now, or hold in your cellar for many years. Enjoy!

The 2013 Shippey Vineyards Flaming J Petite Sirah pours super dark and inky in the glass. The nose is rather shy at first, but dark berry fruit, licorice, spice and some floral notes all come out with a little swirling in the glass.
And it just keeps getting better from there.
Tasting the wine reveals it to still be quite chewy and tannic even at 10 years of age but it's got a nice smoothness underneath which comes out even more as it breathes. It also features juicy dark berry fruit, lots of licorice, well-integrated spice and perhaps even a bit of chalky minerality.
Wow, does this wine blossom with air! I would say it is just coming into its own now and still has a long life ahead of it. If you're drinking it in the near term, I'd recommend opening it several hours ahead of schedule.
It ends dry, long and quite grippy. This is an excellent example of Petite Sirah.
