Have we got a special one today! When this wine came around two words immediately caught my attention: Stolpman and Syrah. And judging by how well it was received last time we offered it, it got your attention too.
Stolpman Vineyards is known for their expertise with Rhone varietals like Syrah (one of my favorites) and I had heard many excellent things about their wines over the years. It also has 20% Petit Verdot, which is one of my favorite underrated grapes. Add in a 94 point score from Wine Enthusiast and I was even more excited to give it a try.
Lo and behold, it turned out to be even better than I expected -- as you can tell by the huge rating I gave it!
This wine gets an overall rating of 8.8 which is extremely hard to do on our rating scale as a wine has to score tremendously high on taste (a perfect 10 here) and be very low in cost. That makes it the highest scoring red wine we've ever offered for an Insider Deal and one of the highest scoring we've ever reviewed period.
The Stolpman Vineyards Para Maria de los Tecolotes is a 50-50 partnership between the Stolpman family (the winery) and the Solorzano family (the wine growers). As the winery explains, it is named after Maria Solorzano:
Maria Solorzano, this wine’s namesake, appears shy around visitors and she is always quick to smile. For anyone that sees her in action, it is clear that she leads by the example of her hard-work. Most comfortable in her routine of perpetual motion out on the vineyard – Maria runs perhaps the hardest working, most passionate vineyard crew in the world. On a daily basis, she teaches La Cuadrilla new techniques to execute a constant barrage of experiments – often adapting on the fly – figuring out practical ways of farming ridiculously high-density vineyards by hand or training canopies for ideal shading and wind-flow.

The nickname for villagers from Santa Cruz, Jalisco; Maria’s hometown, is “Tecolote” – or night owl. The name stems from the popular late night parties thrown in the town. Maria and La Cuadrilla also turn nocturnal for three months out of the year to harvest in the cold night air for maximum freshness. A resident female Great Horned Owl is the most prolific rodent control beast on the vineyard.
There are two reasons I absolutely love collaborations like these between wine growers and winemakers. The first is, of course, because the wine growers finally get their due. After all, as we've heard many times from excellent winemakers, "wine is made in the vineyard".
The second reason is simply that I figure if the wine growers are getting their name put on the bottle with equal billing to the winery, you better believe they are going to supply that winery with their best grapes!

The 2019 Stolpman Vineyards Para Maria de los Tecolotes is 80% Syrah and 20% Petit Verdot all from vineyards under Ruben Solorzano's control in Santa Barbara County. The wine is aged in 100% neutral oak barrels for 9 months and has 14.1% Alcohol.
In a unique (and delicious) twist, half of the Syrah is picked a bit early and goes through whole cluster carbonic maceration in a sealed tank filled with carbon dioxide. This technique, which causes the grape berries to begin to ferment from the inside out without the use of yeast, creates softer tannins and additional flavor compounds that can't be replicated from a traditional fermentation.
The other half of the Syrah is de-stemmed and goes through a traditional open top fermentation.
The 2019 Stolpman Vineyards Para Maria de los Tecolotes opens with a really beautiful aroma of ripe dark berry fruit that is oh so inviting. Add in some floral notes and dried herbs and even a touch of ripe banana and you know you're in for something special here.
That thought is instantly confirmed with an explosion of delicious, deep, juicy flavors upon taking the first sip. This is incredibly tasty stuff. Soft and velvety smooth in the mouth, it features similar flavors to the nose with excellent added touches of peppery spice.
It ends dry, very long and very savory and even has a bit of lasting minerality on the finish.
We love both of these varieties, and this one does not disappoint! We have enjoyed many, many bottles of this wine and it is an absolute no brainer at this price.
