First off, let's talk about what's in this wine. The 2014 The Girls In The Vineyard The Field Blend is 49% Grenache Blanc, 29% Viognier, 11% Piquepoul Blanc and 11% Roussanne all from the Windmill Vineyard in Dunnigan Hills.
Here's how Art + Farm describes it:
Under the guidance of famed viticulturist Steve Matthiasson, The Windmill Vineyard in Dunnigan Hills was planted to four white Rhone varietals, with the intention of producing a true Field Blend. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and then fermented in neutral French oak.
It's extremely unusual these days to find a field blend of Rhone varietals, especially in California.
For those unfamiliar, a field blend is basically old-fashioned winemaking, where different varieties are planted together in the vineyard and all picked and fermented together.
This is in opposition to the current practice of picking and fermenting each variety separately from their own distinct vineyards, each at the peak of their individual ripeness, and then blending them together in precise proportions.
With a field blend the emphasis is on the combination of the whole from the very beginning -- each variety may be at a different level of ripeness but that brings different flavors and textures to the wine. When field blends are done well, they can be simply stunning and can taste much more organic and real compared to the lab-coat blends so many wineries do today that are more an exercise of science than of art.
The second thing to note about this wine is its age. Typically white wines are made to be drunk young, but some, like this one, actually improve with age. If you haven't had the opportunity to taste an aged white wine before here's your chance!
Thirdly is price. I was amazed to hear the regular SRP on this wine is only $20, which is extremely reasonable in my opinion. Of course we're slashing that by 30% for the next day.
And lastly, thanks to its incredible quality and extremely low price, this wine absolutely kills it on our rating scale. In fact, this is the highest Overall Rating of any Insider Deal ever! (And it's one of the highest we've ever given for any review period.)

The 2014 The Girls In The Vineyard The Field Blend begins with a very strong and absolutely lovely aroma of pear, honey, apricot and even some nice herbal notes along with a touch of butter and vanilla cream.
Tasting the wine reveals similar flavors to the nose but great depth of flavor plus some added lemon and citrus. Quite harmonious, this wine features a lovely mouthfeel and texture. It's drinking wonderfully right now.
It ends dry, very long and extremely satisfying and even has a bit of the lip-smacking finish you often find with Picpoul.
Interestingly this wine was just as good when it warmed up and even showed some additional layers that weren't there when it was colder as opposed to many whites that just tend to get flabby.
This is a fantastic wine and a rare opportunity to try a white with some age on it that is still in its prime.
