A solid example of a popular red blend style at a killer price, the Target California Roots Red Blend.
Target does not specify the varieties in it’s California Roots Red Blend but we suspect it has a good portion of Zinfandel.
This wine is available exclusively at Target for just $5. It is produced by Trinchero Family Estates. The Roots line also includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Moscato and Rosé. Of those we’ve tried to date, the Red Blend was far and away our favorite.
From the bottle:

To be honest, somewhat sweet red blends are not our favorite style of wine. Having said that, we recognize they are extremely popular and even though we may not choose to drink them regularly we can still appreciate one that delivers quality. That’s exactly what the Target California Roots Red Blend does. It’s a solid example of the style at a killer price. And thanks to the super low cost of only $5, it doesn’t have to knock your socks off to qualify on our rating scale which demands more from higher priced wines. We like to call it getting your money’s worth.
The 2016 Target California Roots Red Blend begins with a pleasant aroma of ripe dark berry fruit, bits of baking spice and a touch of coffee. Tasting the smooth, medium-bodied wine reveals super-ripe dark jammy fruit and a bit of spice. It has a pleasant, balanced, medium-length finish. As we noted above, it’s somewhat sweet but it should fit right in with a lot of the other popular red blends. It’s surprisingly OK (a compliment) and definitely delivers a lot more value than the $5 price tag. It’s also a couple steps up from wines like Two Buck Chuck (which we’ve never rated high enough to recommend).
