A month or so ago we introduced you to Winecrasher, a new wine retailer that takes a page from travel sites like Priceline and Hotwire. Instead of shopping by the wine name and label, Winecrasher offers info on the variety, scores, region and average price only revealing the actual label after the purchase. In exchange for this anonymity they offer deep discounts on the wines they sell. If you’re willing to roll the dice, you can be in for some significant savings. Today we put it to the test with a wine they are currently offering but that we can’t reveal. Read on to see how it did.
The 2012 [Name Withheld] Toro Tempranillo begins with a truly excellent aroma (especially after an hour or so in the glass) full of blackberry, black cherry, cola, licorice, plum and lovely integrated black pepper notes. Tasting reveals a big, dry, relatively full-bodied wine with good density and fruit. It’s smooth and savory as well with good acidity. It ends very long with a mouth-drying finish featuring lingering coffee and leather along with more blackberry fruit. At just $15 this is a great deal for a wine of this quality.
