We love a good Shiraz-Viognier blend! Adding just a bit of the white grape Viognier to Shiraz originated in the Northern Rhone Valley and the very expensive (and excellent wines) made in Cote Rotie. And while there are some Australian producers who also make wines in this style, it's not all that common. It's a shame because adding a bit of Viognier adds a dimension to the Shiraz that we find fascinating (and delicious). Today we have an excellent and extremely affordable example from South Africa.
The 2016 Tussock Jumper Shiraz-Grenache-Viognier opens with a wonderful spicy aroma of black cherry, dark berries, olive and leather. My first thought on taking a sip of this one was, "Yum, yum, yum!" The wine is loaded with rich, deep fruit flavors along with wonderful touches of sweetness and earth. This is an excellent example of the Shiraz-Viognier blend. It's only 2% Viognier but even that little bit really adds lots of complexity and interest to this ultra-savory expression of Shiraz. The wine ends dry, spicy, and long. Bulk Buy!
