About the winery:
Vigo Cellars is a family-owned, artisan winery dedicated to the crafting of American Rhone wines. Dan and Kim (who is also the executive director of Rhone Rangers) Rodrigues launched Vigo Cellars in 2008 with a single vineyard Syrah from the Avila Valley in the San Luis Obispo Coast wine region, later expanding the portfolio to include a Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Grenache.
With a focus on the crafting of small lots, Vigo Cellars utilizes new world winemaking techniques as well as time honored, old-world methods to express each vineyard’s terroir, while highlighting the varietal’s characteristics.
Named “Vigo” as a tribute to the Rodrigues family heritage, the brand embodies the spirit of adventure. With a journey that began in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, and included travels to Argentina, the Hawaiian Islands and San Francisco, California, the Rodrigues family settled in the San Joaquin Valley in the late-1930’s, farming vineyards and almonds. Three generations later, we are continuing this quest with Vigo Cellars – artisan crafted wines from select vineyards in the Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo Coastal and Santa Barbara County wine growing regions.
About the wine:
Tropical notes of mango and pineapple intertwine with apricot stone fruit and spice, complimented by flinty minerality and racy, natural acidity. Perfect paired with spicy cuisine or your favorite cheese!
Templeton Gap: Named for the ocean breeze that is blown in through a gap in the ridgeline. The elevation is comprised of the Santa Lucia Range mountain slopes and broad alluvial terraces. The soil composition encompasses alluvial soils and sandy to silty to clay loams, calcareous in places. With 17 average inches of precipitation per year, the marine influences enters the region to moderate the daily temperatures, increasing the amount of time that it takes for the grapes to ripen, assisting in the retention of crisp acids.

The 2020 Vigo Cellars Picpoul Blanc opens with a lovely aroma full of assorted tropical fruits plus pear, apricot and a touch of a floral and spice note. It's a great start.
Tasting the wine reveals a smooth mouthfeel, great acidity and similar fruit to the nose with a bit more of the spiciness coming out in the mouth. This is highly quaffable! It's also not quite as tart as some examples of this variety, making it a great place to start your exploration of this grape.
It ends with a dry, long, lip-smacking finish just as you would expect. This is excellent and very easy to drink but don't drink this one too cold to experience it at its best. (Let it sit for a bit after taking it out of the fridge.) Enjoy!
