We’re delighted to be able to bring you this meaty, savory blend of 31% Shiraz (Syrah), 19% Carignan, 15% Mourvedre, 14% Cinsaut, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Pinotage and 2% Viognier from the Basson Family Vineyard in Swartland, South Africa. Aged for 2 years in neutral oak barrels, this wine comes from a vineyard planted in 1919!

Located deep in the Swartland at the foot of the Pardeberg Mountains, the Basson Family Vineyard was first planted by Stephan Basson’s great grandfather in 1919. This vineyard represents a long tradition of winemaking in South Africa that can be traced back to the first plantings in 1659. Sourced from 30 years and older, dry-farmed, bush vines, this wine was produced in conjunction with the Basson family, who have been farming this estate in the Swartland for four generations. The Shweshwe Red blend reflects a quality of South African wine that is rarely seen in North America.

From the winery:
Warp + Weft are the crossed threads that comprise a piece of fabric. This project is the result of the intersection of many different people and the idea that these interwoven “threads of life” can create something greater than the sum of the parts. Shweshwe is a traditional fabric produced in South Africa, considered the denim of the Western Cape. It’s durable, worn by everyone, and rooted in tradition.
The wine opens with complex but inviting aromas of graphite, black pepper and mulberry. The palate is rich and dynamic with flavors of Damson plum, kola nut, sassafras, tayberry, and Bing cherry. Silken but lengthy tannins carry the wine from start to finish, with notes of tobacco, oak and spiced vanilla.

The 2017 Warp + Weft Shweshwe Red Blend opens with a funky, meaty aroma and I love it! This blend definitely has a good amount of influence from the Shiraz/Syrah. Full of mulberry and other dark fruits plus black pepper, graphite, licorice, tobacco and touches of smoke and leather, this one has it all.
The wine tastes smooth, savory and delicious with similar flavors to the nose. All those varieties combine quite harmoniously in the mouth of this full-bodied wine. This is delicious. And it gets even better after it has some air.
It ends dry, a bit grippy, savory and quite long. It was similar on day two.
