Waterbrook Melange - A Real Red Blend

By: Jon Thorsen Published: January 11, 2018 Last Updated: June 1, 2021

Another great example of the amazing value to be found in Washington wine for right around $10.

Waterbrook Melange - A Real Red Blend

45% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 7% Sangiovese, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Syrah, 3% Zinfandel and 1% Tempranillo from vineyards throughout Columbia Valley, Washington. (The Oasis, Waterbrook, Art Den Hoed, Pepper Bridge, Canoe Ridge, Alder Ridge, Froll and Willow Crest vineyards to be exact.) The wine spends 11 months in 20% new American oak barrels and has residual sugar of just 0.7 g/L.

Sample submitted for review. The Waterbrook Melange Founder's Red Blend has an SRP of $15 and is available for as low as $10. Ready to buy? Check your local retailers. 11,865 cases produced.

    From the bottle:

Melange (mey-lahnzh, -lahnj), n. [French] a mixture or blend
Waterbrook Winery, one of Walla Walla's founding wineries, draws its name from the Nez Perce Indian dialect for Walla Walla, meaning "Running Water". Each year, our Melange Founder's Red Blend is the first wine that our winemaker John Freeman blends. This well-crafted red wine blends Washington's finest red varietals marrying the aromas and flavors of plum, black cherry and chocolate. Barrel aging leads to a rounded palate and lingering toasted oak finish.

    14.4% Alcohol

The 2014 Waterbrook Melange Founder's Red Blend begins with a very pleasant aroma of black cherry, plum, vanilla, licorice and cedar. The wine tastes smooth and quite lovely really with dark fruit, good structure and balance and nice touches of spice and herbs. Everything just works together really well in this delicious and dry red blend. (So much better than the super sweet red blends commonly found at this price point, in my opinion.) Touches of coffee lead into the long, dry finish. This wine offers loads of value at this price and it's a great example of what you can get from Washington State for right around $10. Highly Recommended!
