Up first, let's check out the 2017 Writer's Block Malbec sourced from the Red Hills appellation of Lake County. The wine spends 12 months in equal parts French, American and Hungarian oak with 15% of the total being new. It has basically no residual sugar (.07 g/L) and 1,600 cases were produced.

This Malbec is sourced from the Red Hills Appellation of Lake County. The vineyard was planted in 1999-2000 on well drained slopes of iron rich red soil, remnants of an eruption of Mt. Konocti. An excellent vineyard site above 2000 ft., we were one of the first wineries to work with Red Hills Malbec.
Winemaker Quincy Steele’s experiences working in Argentina inform this wine and its style. Native yeast fermentation, extended macerations, and cooler fermentation temperatures give him as much control as possible with respect to extracting. Aromas and flavors are very pronounced ripe red berry and black fruit, and spice with medium acid and moderate tannins.
Extremely versatile food wine that pairs well with most grilled meats and grilled vegetable preparations. Try a grilled flank steak with chimichurri sauce, a cassoulet or a cheese & charcuterie plate.

The 2017 Writer's Block Malbec begins with a lovely aroma of plum, spice, black pepper and a little smoke.
The wine tastes fresh and fruity with lots of dark, tart, juicy flavors. Full-bodied and loaded with flavor, this fun to drink wine features plenty of acidity and firm tannins. A nice burst of spice and black pepper lead into the dry, long, grippy finish.
The ripe, juicy style actually reminds me a bit of one of our all-time favorite wines, the Scott Harvey Barbera.

Now on to the 2017 Writer's Block Cabernet Franc! Just 1,250 cases of this Cab Franc beauty were produced. The grapes come from Shannon Ridge Vineyard. The wine has basically no residual sugar (0.04 g/L). Add in 15 months in hybrid oak barrels and you've got quite a masterful combination.

We feel that Cabernet Franc excels in specific vineyards of Lake County, and have worked with this varietal from Shannon Ridge Vineyards in the High Valley area for almost a decade now.
This Cabernet Franc has aromas of red cherry, raspberry, plum, and licorice. Flavors are of red fruit, raspberry, and plum with smooth acidity, followed by soft tannins. We age the wine for 15 months in mainly hybrid barrels.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs well with many different dishes; try it with braised short ribs, lasagna, or a portabella burger.

The 2017 Writer's Block Cabernet Franc from Steele Wines begins with a really lovely aroma typical of this variety with cherry, plum, a touch of green and dried herbs, a little vanilla and some sweet spice. It's quite enticing and gets even better as it opens up in the glass.
Tasting reveals this to be lovely, savory stuff. With juicy fruit similar to the nose, good acidity and a nice spicy streak this is crowd pleasing Cab Franc! Add in great balance and this is an excellent example of the variety especially at this low price. It's quite food friendly too.
It ends dry with slightly grippy tannins and a long finish. I love it!
