Napa Cab in an unlikely format! We review the Bota Box Limited Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1.5L box.
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California.
If you’ve followed our reviews of box wines in the past you know that we are big fans of the format. Our biggest complaint has always been that so many of the boxes out there just don’t contain high quality wine! So many brands see the box as an opportunity to get rid of mostly sweet, low quality juice.
Today we’ve got a big brand, Bota Box, that put some high quality Napa Cabernet in a box. We’re definitely intrigued.
The 1.5 liter Bota Box Limited Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has an SRP of $20, and can be found for slightly less than that. That puts the 750ml equivalent at $9 per bottle. Let’s check it out.

Bota Box Limited Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Notes: Our Limited Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon brings forward generous black cherry and blackberry aromas shaped by the valley’s signature growing conditions. The result is a smooth, complex red with layers of rich fruit and a subtle finish that reflects why Napa Valley is among the world’s great homes for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Pairs With: Pair it with herb rubbed steaks or chops, and friends who deserve a treat.
“Bota Box ‘Limited Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a Napa Valley classic in every way—just in a more sustainable and convenient package. It showcases the qualities that I love in Cabernet Sauvignon from this incredible region.” – Alicia Ysais, Winemaker
The Napa Valley is one of those “just right” sweet spots for world-class wine. The region rests where sun-soaked days meet naturally cooler nights, creating a balanced growing season where wine grapes thrive. That perfect interplay creates wines with richly concentrated flavors and that unmistakably Napa Valley smoothness. No wonder Cabernet Sauvignon loves it here.
13.5% Alcohol
There’s not a ton happening on the nose of the Bota Box Limited Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon but there is some ripe black cherry, a little baking spice and touches of licorice.
Tasting reveals that the wine is actually quite good in the mouth especially after it has a little time to breathe in the glass. It’s balanced, fresh, smooth and has good depth and structure and nicely integrated spice. It’s not very complex, but at the price point this is a very nice Cab. And it’s not terribly sweet like a lot of box wines!
It ends soft, dry, a bit grippy and actually rather long. This is not bad at all. And the best part is that it is the exact same on Day 2, 3, 4 and all the way up to day 30 if it lasts that long!
