Canto Del Principe Tre Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Review

Brunello from Trader Joe’s, but is it good enough? We review the Canto Del Principe Tre Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva.

Canto Del Principe Tre Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Review

As is usual, there’s not much info available from Trader Joe’s on this wine. We do know, however, given the rules for Brunello that the wine must be 100% Sangiovese and must spend at least 6 years maturing (with at least two of those in oak barrels).

The wine is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s for SRP $27.99. It is imported by d’Aquino Italian Importing Co. Inc.

From the bottle:

2019 Canto Del Principe Tre Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Elegant and complex, with notes of ripe red fruit, spice and earthy undertones. Balanced structure and great aging potential, make this Riserva a true expression of the Montalcino terroir. Serve at room temperature.

The 2019 Canto Del Principe Tre Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens with a pleasing aroma of black cherry, lots of leather, a little baking spice and a bit of an earthy, forest floor note although it does take some time for all these things to come out, so be patient.

Honestly, there’s not much going on at first pop and pour – we gave it an 8 Taste Rating at best – but give it a few hours to breathe and it’s a different wine. After a good amount of air it shows some nice harmony and balance with similar flavors to the nose plus juicy fruit and well-integrated spice.

It ends dry, a bit grippy and long and is even better on day 2 where it is more balanced. This one is just barely good enough for the $27.99 price tag. In other words, unless you really have to have Brunello Riserva on the label, you can find much better Sangiovese at the same price point. (See our list of recommended Sangiovese wines here.) We give it a low 9 Taste Rating (91 points).
