Castello della Mugazzena Gargantua – Elegant and Savory

By: Jon Thorsen Published: June 11, 2021 Last Updated: November 22, 2021

An Italian Syrah Saturday Splurge, the Castello della Mugazzena Gargantua from Tuscany.

Castello della Mugazzena Gargantua – Elegant and Savory

100% Syrah from Tuscany, Italy. The wine spends 12 months in barriques.

Sample submitted for review. This wine retails for around 30 Euros (Saturday Splurge) and will have limited availability in the US.

    From the winery:

Appetite comes with eating…but the thirst goes away with drinking.
    - “Gargantua e Pantagruel” François Rabelais

    Main Grape: Syrah 100%
    Denomination: IGT Toscana
Wine making: alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperature

    13.5% Alcohol

Well here's something you don't see every day, a 100% Syrah from Italy. Let's check it out!

The 2017 Castello della Mugazzena Gargantua opens with an enticing aroma of black cherry along with nicely integrated dried herb, baking spice and floral notes.

Tasting reveals a rather light-bodied and elegant Syrah with great balance with quite a nice expression of its juicy black cherry fruit. Continued touches of baking spice and dried herbs and a silky mouthfeel lead into the dry, long, savory finish.

This one will be quite hard to find but well worth the splurge if you do!
