A Tuscan blend that delivers more than anticipated, we review the Castello La Leccia Vivaio del Cavaliere Toscano Rosso.
75% Sangiovese, 20% Malvasia Nera and 5% Syrah, all organically grown, from Tuscany, Italy. The wine is matured in concrete tanks for 6 months.
Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $14 and is available for as low as $12. 15,000 bottles were produced.
Clear but deep ruby red; savory, meaty aromas combine with rich dried fruit and spice characters. The palate has ripe black plum and bramble notes along with bright red cherry fruit. Supple, structured tannins and balancing acidity give a full finish. The Syrah gives it a depth, the Sangiovese the smoothness. Pair this wine with pasta, meat sauces, roasted lamb, white meat in general and cheeses.
13.5% Alcohol
The 2020 Castello La Leccia Vivaio del Cavaliere Toscana Rosso opens with a pleasing aroma of dark fruit, licorice and spice with an earthy and even a bit of a meaty streak.
Taking a sip reveals smooth, juicy fruit with all the other touches from the nose including the earthiness and meatiness continuing. With good structure there's much more to this wine than you would expect for just $12.
Fine tannins lead into the dry, grippy and long finish.
