Crios Red Blend - The Real Deal

By: Jon Thorsen Published: September 17, 2018 Last Updated: May 30, 2021

An authentically good wine from Argentina, the Susana Balbo Crios Red Blend.

Crios Red Blend - The Real Deal

A blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Tannat from Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. The wine spends 8 months in 20% new and 80% second use French oak.

Sample submitted for review. The Crios Red Blend has an SRP of $15 and is available for as low as $9. Ready to buy? Check your local retailers. Imported by Folio Fine Wine Partners.

    From the bottle:

Susana Balbo, Argentina's leading and most innovative winemaker, thrives by exploring the limitless possibilities of blends to make a wine with the most unique character. This inspired blend is full of curiosity and discovery. Explore its notes of blackberry, raspberry and spice.

Food Pairings: BBQ Chicken, Grilled Sausage, Smoked Cheeses.

    14.5% Alcohol

Let's face it, many inexpensive red blends these days just aren't very good. Perhaps due to the popularity of this style, there seems to be an abundance of manufactured, syrupy sweet and artificially oaky examples on the market. For many of these, it's obvious they've spent more time on the marketing than on crafting the wine. And while marketing is certainly important, it should never come before the actual product. That's why it's always refreshing to find the real deal, which is exactly what we have today.

The 2015 Crios Red Blend from Susana Balbo begins with a very pleasant aroma of ripe blackberry, spice, lots of licorice and a little earth. The medium-bodied wine tastes dry and chewy, with dark juicy fruit, lots more licorice and touches of chocolate and vanilla. It ends with a long, dry, spicy, grippy finish. This is the real deal!

Ready to buy the Crios Red Blend? Check your local retailers.
