Just 331 cases were produced of this non-vintage blend. While, as in a traditional field blend, all the different grape varieties were harvested and fermented together this wine actually combines the results of two different vintages (2018 and 2020) into one absolutely lovely wine.
The wine comes from a single vineyard - the Johnson Family Home Ranch in Ukiah (Mendocino), California. It spends 8 months in neutral French oak barrels and has just 0.4 g/L of residual sugar.
As a side note - we love field blends. Instead of the almost mechanical character of so many red blends, where each variety is picked at the absolute optimal ripeness and the blend is meticulously curated to get to an end result, with a field blend - you get whatever the vineyard gives you. We also find that letting those different varieties co-ferment together, rather than each separately, can often add another dimension to the resulting wine.

Modeled after the classic "Clairet" of Bordeaux, which were Bordeaux red blends that were more moderate in tannin, often blended with Malbec to craft a softer wine, the Farmstrong Field Claret is a field blend of grapes picked on the same day, from the same family vineyard, and then co-fermented (all fermented in the same tank together). It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec & Petit Verdot from the Johnson Family Home Ranch in Ukiah, CA.
The vineyard is farmed sustainably, and is certified Fish Friendly Farming.
After harvest, the grapes were de-stemmed, and fermented together in an open-top fermenter. The extraction from the skins was a combination of pump overs and punch downs to moderately mange the extraction of tannins and keep them in balance with the acid and flavors. The wine was pressed off from the skins after 14 days and aged for 8 months in neutral French oak barrels. Unfined, and filtered prior to bottling.

The Farmstrong Field Claret opens with very pleasing aromas of black cherry, red currants, a little spice, a little pepper and more.
Taking a sip reveals that this wine is excellent right from the get-go, no breathing or decanting is needed here. Featuring smooth, juicy fruit this extremely balanced and easy to drink blend is pleasing in so many respects, especially for those that enjoy more elegant wines.
A nice burst of spice on the mid-palate leads into the dry, slightly grippy and quite long finish. This is very, very good. - lovely in fact! And while it's ready to drink right out of the bottle it was even a bit better on day 2, boding well for its longevity in your wine rack.
