We love the absolutely delicious wines from Gard Vintners and this is one of our favorites, as evidenced by the fact we’ve offered multiple vintages and also featured it in our Red Wine Intro Pack. Keep reading for all the delicious details but the bottom line here is simply, “Get Some!”

Don Isidro, pronouced ee-SEE-droh, is named for Gard’s vineyard manager, Isidro Mondragon and first debuted in 2007. We’ve enjoyed many a vintage of this wine since then and we have to say the 2021 we are offering today is as good as ever. Vinous, Northwest Wine Report and International Wine Review all agree giving it 91 points. We score it as a 9 Taste Rating or 91-93 points.

Of course, not only is this all estate fruit from the Solaksen Vineyard, but it is also aged for 14 months with an extended maceration. Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), the wine also includes 22% of that remarkable Washington Syrah. It’s a fantastic combination.

And if you’re not familiar with Gard, they’ve created quite a name for themselves. Here’s some more info on the winery:

Gård, meaning “farm” in many of the Scandinavian languages, is a tribute to our family’s Scandinavian heritage and farming tradition.

Gard Vintners is 100% estate grown sustainably at Lawrence Vineyards in the Royal Slope AVA. Lawrence Vineyards features eight distinct vineyard sites with elevations ranging 930 feet to 1,675 feet. The combination of elevation and south-facing slope provides a great framework for grape production, while the diversity of each of the locations delivers a high level of complexity to Gård wines. Lawrence Vineyards is certified sustainable by Vinewise.org.

The winery was founded by Josh and Lisa Lawrence, along with Josh’s dad John Lawrence and uncle Sandy Lawrence, whose family has farmed the Royal Slope for more than 55 years.

This is one of those wines that is so good it often retails for even more than the $28 SRP — if you can even find it. Of course, that’s not the way we roll here at Reverse Wine Snob…

2021 Gard The Don Cabernet Sauvignon

THE WINE: Kirsch liquor, orange peel, red licorice, and sandalwood. Swirling brings crème de cassis, rhubarb, cherry compote, green olive tapenade, and dry herbs. The mouthfeel is playful and mouthwatering, with tons of red fruit, citrus, and savory tones. The mid palate is lively, with a perfect combination of sweet and savory flavors, and remarkable texture and finesse. The wine finishes vibrant, with a kiss of red fruit sweetness, spice, and a mellow grip to make you crave another sip. Beautiful now, you can enjoy this deal of a wine for the next 8 years.

THE WINEMAKING: This is stainless steel fermented, with extended maceration. Aged in stainless steel for 14
months.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Gard The Don Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a very attractive aroma full of ripe dark berry fruit, licorice, bit of sweet tobacco and cigar box. With time in the glass spice, herbal notes, vanilla, mint and even a bit of a smoky note evolve. It’s a wonderful start.

Taking a sip reveals a silky smooth, soft and very tasty wine with all those luscious notes from the nose combining harmoniously in the mouth. We love the addition of the Syrah here which adds a bit of a peppery, smoky, meaty note. And the whole thing gets even better as it has more air.

It ends dry, a bit grippy, chewy and quite long with some lingering mineral notes and touches of vanilla. It was just as good on day 2.

Still a bit on the young side, this wine will drink wonderfully for at least the next 6-7 years so there’s no fear in stocking up, which we heartily recommend you do.
