2022 Chateau St. Jean Magnolia Reserve Merlot
Sonoma County

Our roots are in Sonoma County. We have made wines from the region’s diverse vineyards for
over 50 years, starting in 1973. A fine wine estate with European style, we are proud to produce
balanced and elegant wines, a hallmark of Chateau St. Jean. Our single-vineyard and blend
expressions celebrate Sonoma County’s distinctive, world-class growing region, and the special
vineyard sites in which our grapes are grown.

Vineyards: The sourcing for this wine comes primarily (90%) from Sebastiani Vineyards, just a few blocks from the town square in Sonoma. The soils at this site are volcanic, rocky, low fertility and well draining, with a climate that is warm enough to fully ripen Bordeaux varietals, but cool enough to retain balance and acidity. The remaining 10% of the blend is Malbec from Magnolia Ranch in Dry Creek Valley.

Vintage: The 2022 growing season in Sonoma County was marked by the ongoing drought. A mild dry winter and spring led to an early bud break. The warm summer that followed set the harvest up for an early start. Smaller than average cluster and berry sizes resulted in a smaller crop with concentrated flavors and complex flavors.

Winemaking: The grapes were destemmed and crushed to tank for a two-day cold soak prior to inoculation and a warm ferment to dryness. The wine was pressed off skins with a small amount of press going to tank for settling and then racking to new and used French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. After 18 months of aging, the wine was filtered and bottled.

Tasting Notes: This sultry Merlot opens with ripe aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, plum, cherry, vanilla, and caramel. On the palate, ripe black cherry is accented by notes of sweet oak, vanilla, caramel, and baking spice. Round and lush on the palate, smooth, integrated tannins round out the generous finish. Pair this wine with mushroom stuffed ravioli, cassoulet, or Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam triple cream cheese.

The 2022 Chateau St. Jean Magnolia Reserve Merlot opens with a very strong, inviting aroma full of dark berry fruit and plenty of baking spice plus a bit of an oaky note, licorice, leather, and more. It’s a fantastic start.

Tasting the wine reveals…Wow, what a lovely wine! It’s big with tons of depth and concentration, abundant rich and dense fruit and lots of well-integrated baking spice. Juicy and smooth, it hits all the same notes as the nose. There’s nothing subtle about this one, it’s just pure delicious.

It ends dry and rich on the very long and lasting finish and was just as good on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.
