It comes from the Luna Matta, Mesa Del Sol, Rolph and Coastview vineyards in the Central Coast of California and spent 20 months in neutral oak. A wonderfully intoxicating aroma gives way to a very deep, complex, balanced and deliciously mouthwatering wine. It normally retails for $48 a bottle and just 413 cases were produced.

It comes from the Coastview, Escolle, Rolph and Mesa Del Sol vineyards in the Central Coast of California and spent 20 months in French oak (50% new). It is a wonderful example of Syrah in the Northern Rhone style – complex, silky smooth and with plenty of structure. It also normally retails for $48 a bottle and just 360 cases were produced.

ACCOLADES: 93 points – Wine Enthusiast
MATT KETTMAN (Wine Enthusiast): “Black cherry and light licorice aromas converge on the nose of this blend of 38% Mourvèdre, 28% Grenache, 26% Petite Sirah and 8% Syrah. The palate is intense with black cherry compote flavors that are dusted in pepper and herbs.”

WINEMAKER NOTES: The 2022 vintage was an anomaly of a year for California wine – delivering a warmer than usual winter without much rain, plus an incredibly hot summer and harvest. Though Maniacal has always been a GSM (in that order), we found that Mourvedre was the standout varietal from this vintage. This wine is proof that in a hot climate, blending is a must to craft the best wine possible.

The grapes were handpicked, sorted, and fully destemmed. 3 to 5 days of cold maceration was then followed by 7 to 14 days of fermentation using wild yeasts and bacteria. Pump-overs and punch-downs were used for cap management. The wines were drained and pressed, then barreled down to neutral 500L puncheons. They aged for 4 months, and were then racked in the spring, where they aged an additional 16 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Cordant Maniacal GSM opens with a wonderful, intoxicating aroma of black cherry, blackberry and other dark fruit plus sweet spice, licorice, cedar, vanilla, touches of black pepper and lots of other interesting notes as you swirl and sniff. It’s a lovely, complex start especially once it has some time to breathe.

Tasting the wine reveals that it is wonderfully balanced and just delicious. It was especially comforting to drink after a few days of trying some not so good wines! It features dark, juicy fruit similar to the nose and a very smooth mouthfeel. We love that Mourvedre is the leading grape here and that there is also a healthy portion of Petite Sirah.

It ends dry, very long and a touch grippy on the mouthwatering finish and it was just as good on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points.

2023 Cordant Indocile Red

Tasting notes: This year presented us with an opportunity to push ourselves to craft a new wine to showcase the uniqueness of the vintage. Within both our Rhone and Pinot programs we are known for producing both vineyard-designated and blended wines, such as our southern-Rhone inspired “Maniacal” GSM. So it seemed only right that we put together a northern-Rhone inspired blend that leverages many of our cooler-climate syrah vineyards. We have, and we’re excited to release the first vintage of “Indocile”. Sourcing Syrah from some of our favorite vineyards (Coastview, Mesa del Sol, and Escolle), this wine is brimming with a mixture of cool and warm climate characteristics – dark fruits, herbs de Provence, lavender, and cigar to name a few. At the same time, it is also incredibly silky and sensual on the palate; we can’t get enough of it.

MATT KETTMAN (Wine Enthusiast): “Lavish aromas of violet and creme de cassis foam makes for a pleasantly deep nose on this blend There’s decent tension to the palate, where lavender, rose petal, blueberry and grape flavors align.”

WINEMAKER NOTES: Indocile is always a syrah-dominant blend, but its specific blend is assembled differently each vintage depending on what is “speaking” to us from the cellar through our blending trials. In 2023, Indocile is a blend of 4 vineyards up and down the Central Coast – Mesa del Sol (Monterey), Escolle (Santa Lucia Highlands), Coastview (Gabilan Mountains), and Rolph (Adelaida District). We hand-picked from each vineyard at optimal phenolic ripeness and vinified the grapes separately. The fruit fermented natively, some of which was fully destemmed, and some of which was whole cluster. We used pump-overs twice a day for cap management with maceration lasting between 7 and 14 days. The grapes were pressed and barreled down to a mixture of 225L barrique and 500L puncheons (50% new). The blend was assembled the following spring, after which it was racked and returned to barrel for an additional 12 months of aging (20 months in total). Indocile was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

And now on to our review:

The 2023 Cordant Indocile Syrah opens with a harmonious, enticing aroma full of dark berry fruit, lots of lovely herbal notes, violets, lavender, cigar box and plenty of other lovely touches to round things out. There’s a lot to discover here and it is a great start.

Taking a sip reveals the wine to be silky smooth and juicy with similar flavors to the nose that are a bit more tart in the mouth. It also features nice balance, good acidity and plenty of structure. This is very nice and definitely in the northern Rhone style as the winery says.

It ends dry, soft, juicy and very long and might have been even slightly better on day 2.
