Located in the Coastal Ranges of northeastern Lake County, the High Valley AVA rises between 1,600 and 3,000 feet in elevation, providing our finest mountain fruit.
Thanks to the high elevation and cool breezes from the oldest lake in North America, it is one of the coolest appellations in Lake County. We run 1,000 head of sheep on these vineyards, composting the weeds into nutrients for the red, rocky volcanic soils. These are intensely flavored grapes, and we craft them into wines that capture the character of this remarkable region.
The high elevation and cool breezes also contribute to huge diurnal shifts (up to a 50 degree swing within a single day!), allowing the grapes to maintain high acidity while they slowly ripen over an extended growing period. Add in those wonderful volcanic soils and you have a remarkable combination.
Today’s excellent High Valley AVA Zin comes from the Caldwell Block 14 and Morine vineyards. Aged in 20% new oak, the result is a complex and flavorful Zin that normally retails for $35 a bottle. Not so today, however…

From the winery:
We combine grapes from our Caldwell Block 14 and Morine vineyards to create a rich, robust wine with plenty of personality.
The High Valley Vineyards are the sources of this Zinfandel. The North facing slope allows for longer hangtime while the South facing slope aids in the development of rich flavors. Mostly neutral barrels mellow out tannin, but 20% new French and American oak adds a spiciness and toast that compliments Zin well.
Naturally structured with dark ripe fruit flavors and ample spice, our Zinfandel is bathed in sweet, toasted oak notes that lead to a smooth, mellow finish.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 High Valley Vineyard Zinfandel opens with pleasing aromas of black cherry, licorice, cocoa, cola and vanilla plus touches of cedar, clove, fennel and other spices. There are lots of secondary notes on this one!
Taking a sip reveals the wine to be quite harmonious in the mouth. It’s not a big, over-the-top type of Zin but medium-bodied and flavorful with a good amount of depth and complexity. It also has a silky smooth texture. Easy to drink and quite satisfying, pair this with bratwurst or sausages off the grill.
It ends dry, quite long and a bit grippy and was just as good on day 2. We put this one at the high end of 8 Taste Rating, giving it 90 points, as does Wine Enthusiast.
