The Madrigal family have a long history of farming top vineyards in Napa Valley as well as making wine for their own eponymous label. Known for their excellent (and expensive) wines, the winery and estate vineyard was sold in 2024.

To give you an idea of the caliber of the winery and its Calistoga vineyard, both were bought by winemaker Jayson Woodbridge for his own Fortunate Son label. He’s the founder of Hundred Acre and has made 75+ 100-point wines.

And while the Madrigal label still belongs to the family, they don’t appear to be producing new wines at this point. We have been extremely fortunate, however, to get our hands on some of the very last of their excellent inventory.

In fact, we didn’t even know these wines were still around until after the warehouse holding their remaining stock took inventory as a result of our previous offer on their Napa Valley Zinfandel (which sold out).

Much to our delight, they found three of their estate Calistoga reds! They are:

• The rich, juicy and not for the faint of heart, 2017 Madrigal Calistoga Petit Verdot.
• The smooth, structured and balanced 2019 Madrigal Calistoga Zinfandel (a step up from the Napa Valley Zinfandel we previously offered).
• The stunningly delicious 2019 Madrigal Nuestra Sangre Bordeaux Blend.

We don’t have a lot of info on these wines as that is the way these types of acquisitions go, BUT we do know they are absolutely delicious, all scoring 93 points and up, with two Perfect 10 Taste Ratings. The winemaker was another famous one, Ed Sbragia.

The production of all the Madrigal wines is relatively small, usually 2-300 cases or less. That said we can find no record that the vintages on offer here today were ever sold anywhere besides the winery, which makes us think the production on these was even smaller.

The 2017 Petit Verdot and 2019 Zinfandel all specify Calistoga on the label. The 2019 Nuestra Sangre just says Napa Valley on the label, although we found record that other vintages were advertised as Calistoga and it wears the same purple label as the others, not the white label found on the Napa Valley wines. In any case, we can’t be 100% sure it is from the Calistoga estate but we do know it is a slam dunk Perfect 10 Taste Rating regardless of where it is from!

The winery price on each of these was $60-$65 a bottle. Today you’re getting the last of them for significantly less…

Up first we’ve got the 2017 Madrigal Family Winery Calistoga Estate Petit Verdot. It has 15.2% alcohol.

The 2017 Madrigal Family Winery Calistoga Estate Petit Verdot pours super dark and inky in the glass and immediately envelopes you with ripe, rich, deep, dark fruit aromas plus lots of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, cedar, licorice and much more. It’s a wonderful, very aromatic and expressive start.

The wine tastes rich and juicy and is not for the faint of heart! We love single varietal Petit Verdot, especially when its done this well. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, this is a great chance to see how this variety can really shine all on its own.

It ends dry, quite long and grippy. By day 2, the finish was even longer, with the juicy fruit going on for what seems like days. Yum!

Up next we’ve got the 2019 Madrigal Family Winery Calistoga Zinfandel, which clocks in at 15.9% alcohol.

The 2019 Madrigal Family Winery Calistoga Zinfandel begins with aromas of black cherry, licorice, cedar, some briary forest floor notes, hints of mint, anise and more. It’s a very nice start and even more comes out as it has time to breathe.

Taking a sip reveals a smooth, structured, balanced Zin that is just a delight to drink. Featuring similar flavors to nose, it is at a wonderful spot in its development where it is just starting to gain some extra notes from age but also still young enough that it has plenty of life left.

It ends dry and very long and lasting on the satisfying finish. It was at least as good on day 2 where it gained a bit of a dried fruit note and perhaps a bit more depth. We put this at the very high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 93 points. Double yum!

And finally we’ve got the Merlot based 2019 Madrigal Family Winery Nuestra Sangre Bordeaux blend. It comes in at 15.3% alcohol.

The 2019 Madrigal Family Winery Nuestra Sangre Bordeaux blend opens with a strong, inviting aroma of black cherry, blackberry, violets, baking spices, a bit of a minty note and touches of dried herbs. Other nuances comes out with more time in the glass too. It’s a wonderful start. At a little over 6 years old, this has aged extremely well.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth, juicy and delicious with plenty of dark fruit, nicely integrated spice and all the same touches as the nose. It features great depth, structure and balance and it gets even better as it has more air. This is just a pleasure to drink and would make an absolutely indulgent burger wine.

It ends dry, very long and grippy on the mouth watering finish and was just as good on day 2. Triple yum!
