There aren’t any outside reviews of the 2020 Merlot yet but previous vintages, including the 2018 we offered, were scored as high as 98-points, and we think this one is just as good.
As always, these small batch wines are produced using Peterson Winery’s “zero manipulation” philosophy eschewing additives and letting the true flavors of the grape and the particular vintage shine through. (And since they are not fined or filtered, they are also vegan friendly).

Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend. Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10).
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Up first, let’s take a look at the Cabernet which is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc all from the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. The wine spends an incredible 26 months in barrel (33% new French oak, 33% 2-year-old French oak and 34% older, neutral oak). Just 405 cases were produced.
From the winery:
This is our most terroir-driven wine: a Peterson wine that shouts out its origin with every sip. Our Bradford Mountain vineyards produce wine grapes with a unique and very recognizable minerality. That expression or sense of place reaches its apex in the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.
The cuttings for this vineyard were brought when we moved from Mount Eden in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the 1980’s. This selection, taken by Dr. Rixford in the 1880’s from Chateau Margaux, was planted at his La Questa Vineyard near Woodside in the Santa Cruz Mountains, from where it was propagated in new plantings elsewhere. It’s history and pedigree have shown to be second to none.
The intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon is complemented with exotic spice from Cabernet Franc, wonderful aromatics from Petit Verdot, and plush fruit qualities from Merlot to create a wine that offers layer upon layer of flavors and aromas. Though big and bold, this is still a wine with balance and finesse. It is not one of those over-oaked and over-extracted creations that are currently the rage with some wine critics yet have no place on the table, nor the potential for successful bottle aging. This is a wine that will definitely benefit from both bottle age and/or decanting to allow the wine to open and reveal all of its depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes: A robust nose showcases the essence of the Bradford Mountain terroir with big fruit aromatics of cherry, blackberry and currant mingled with subtle chokecherry, cedar and a rich minerality. With every whiff more aromas appear. The palate’s intensity starts with dark cherry, blackberry and pomegranate flavors, then broadens to include huckleberry and mocha, and repeats the mineral essence found on the nose. These delicious flavors are wrapped in layers of integrating oak and tannins that contribute to the concentration and intensity of flavors. Not a wine for the faint of heart, but one that rewards you sip after sip.
Enjoy with friends who will appreciate how this wine brings out the best in a medium-rare filet mignon, seared bone-in lamb chops, or pepper-crusted ahi with a bright pink center.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Peterson Bradford Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a very pleasing aroma of black cherry, cedar, some other dark berry fruits and spice plus touches of vanilla, chocolate and more. It’s a fantastic start and it reveals even more as it has time to breathe.
Taking a sip reveals this to be a deep, utterly delicious wine. It features similar flavors to the nose that are a bit more tart in the mouth, and it has a very smooth mouthfeel with wonderful balance and great acidity. And again, it just keeps on getting better the longer it is open. This is a fantastic Cabernet.
It ends dry, very long, savory and grippy on the delicious finish and it was just as good on day 2. This is lovely, lovely, lovely!

Up next, let’s take a look at the Merlot which is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon both from the Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. The wine spends an incredible 25 months in barrel (35% new French oak and 65% 5-year-old French oak). Just 125 cases were produced.
From the winery:
When we first planted Merlot in our Bradford Mountain Estate Vineyard in the 1980s, it was mostly used as a blending component for our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Estate Cabernet Franc. In the mid and late 90s, my father bottled small amounts of Merlot to showcase the delicious depth of flavors capable from this varietal. These wines have held up well for over 20 years.
After a 10-year hiatus of not bottling a varietal Merlot, the quality of the grapes in 2012 convinced us to give this noble variety another round in the spotlight. In years when the grapes from our mountain vineyard are of exceptional depth, we will continue to produce a Merlot to satisfy its fervent fans.
Combining all the soft, plush quality that Merlot is known for with the structure from grapes grown at our mountain vineyard site makes for a wine I am truly proud of and never shy to share at any gathering.
Tasting Notes: The nose offers focused aromas of mixed dark berries fused with vanillin oak and seasoned cigar box. On the palate, a beam of ripe cherry merges with juicy plum, mocha-infused oak, dark chocolate, red currant and an alluring mineral essence. Integrating oak and tannins tame this richly textured wine, while adding to its ageability.
Perfect to open when serving flank steak stuffed with cremini mushrooms, spinach and goat cheese, or Dijon-rubbed pork loin roast drizzled with cherry-orange sauce.

The 2020 Peterson Bradford Mountain Vineyard Merlot begins with a complex, welcoming aroma of dark fruit, dusty spice, vanilla, a little cedar, a little leather, a little cigar box and much more. It continues to develop even more secondary notes as it has time to breathe.
It only takes one sip to know that this is some truly fantastic Merlot! Featuring an amazingly smooth, lush, comforting mouthfeel, the wine is wonderfully balanced and has well-integrated spice and wonderful chocolate notes complementing the dark fruit all the way through the finish.
It ends dry, very long and a bit juicy and grippy. It does need an hour or two to open up but then this is the definition of harmonious. It was just as good on day 2.
