The wine is aged in French oak (50% new) and 75% undergoes malolactic fermentation. Rich, juicy smooth with lots of mineral notes, it’s just fantastic. It normally retails for $69 a bottle.
- Two bottles of the 2022 Sojourn Cellars Durell Vineyard Chardonnay which received a 95-Point rating from International Wine Review plus 93 points from both Wine Enthusiast and Owen Bargreen, and a 10 Taste Rating (94+ Points) from us. This one is also aged in French oak (40% new) and 85% undergoes malolactic fermentation. Harmonious and layered, it only takes one sniff to know this is something special. It normally retails for $60 a bottle.
Both of these benefit from the partial malolactic fermentation so they don’t veer into buttery territory but still profit from wonderful, smooth and round mouthfeels with plenty juicy fruit and acidity. That balancing act is done to perfection here in our opinion.

2021 Sojourn Cellars Rueling Vineyard Chardonnay
Sonoma Coast, Sonoma CountyReuling Vineyard is located just off Highway 116 between Graton and Forestville. This wine is rich and distinctive. A unique “suitcase” Montrachet clone of Chardonnay takes center stage here, and, when combined with the exceptional 2021 growing conditions, demonstrates balanced acidity and rich, complex flavors in the finished wine. The wine is aged in French oak (50% new) and 75% undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Reuling Vineyard is perched on a small hillside with gentle slopes at an elevation of 250 feet. It benefits from the cool marine influences converging from the coast, yet is exposed to the sun and afternoon heat, allowing the grapes to reach optimal maturity. It’s extremely sandy Goldridge soil naturally stresses the vines, resulting in low yields and concentrated flavors.
This rich, full-bodied Chardonnay exhibits flavors of honeysuckle, pear, honeydew melon and nutmeg that unfold with layers of complexity.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Sojourn Cellars Rueling Vineyard Chardonnay begins with beautiful aromas of pear plus lemon and other citrus, some lovely savory and salty notes and touches of fresh baked bread and butterscotch. There’s a lots going on here but it is very cohesive. It’s a wonderful start.
The wine tastes just delightful. It features a very round and smooth mouthfeel plus all the same flavors as the nose. There’s lots of sea salt minerality throughout which is a wonderful complement to all the juicy, tart fruit.
The 75% malolactic is just about perfect in our opinion as the wine retains plenty of juicy fruit and acidity but also benefits from the round, slightly creamy mouthfeel without veering off into buttery territory.
It ends dry, very long and juicy with a bit of lasting chalky minerality that is really nice and unique. Fantastic!

2022 Sojourn Cellars Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
Sonoma Coast, Sonoma CountyWe are fortunate to work with two outstanding Durell Vineyard Chardonnay blocks that blend with synergy and result in exceptional wines each vintage. These two blocks of Old Wente clone Chardonnay have formed the Sojourn Durell Chardonnay since 2012. The 2022 vintage offered lower yields and the Chardonnay berries were tiny and sparse leading to greater intensity in the wine.
We picked the blocks about a week apart and both blocks were picked at night to retain freshness and allow us to extract only the highest quality juice. The blocks were pressed whole-cluster and fermented separately in French oak barrels (40% new). 85% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation.
This wine offers a unique combination of apple and citrus fruit aromas with layers of minerality. It is expansive yet balanced, with great acidity, firm structure, and a long finish.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Sojourn Cellars Durell Vineyard Chardonnay opens with a harmonious and intoxicating aroma of citrus, especially lemon, with elegant touches of vanilla cream, flowers, a touch of a chalky note and much more as you sniff and swirl. It only takes one sniff to know this is something special.
The first thing you notice when tasting is the smooth, round, mouth-filling texture followed quickly by the layers of fruit with nice touches of spice throughout. It features similar notes to the nose, but the fruit is a bit more tart in the mouth with touches of tropical fruit appearing as well.
It ends dry, very long and juicy with a touch of that chalkiness from the nose returning. Now this is some fantastic, splurgeworthy Chardonnay!
