This is a simply fantastic wine. Layered, deep and complex, it received 97 points from Robert Parker and it gets a perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points) from us. It’s easy to see why….
First, there’s the place where it comes from, the wonderful cool-climate Murmur Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, planted by Tooth & Nail owner Rob Murray. Sitting at the mouth of the Santa Maria River, the marine influence helps the grapes develop wonderfully.
Next, there’s the exceptional grapes from this vineyard. The wine is mostly Grenache (87%) coming from two distinct clones (Alban and Clone 362). Graciano (10%), Mourvèdre (2%) and Syrah (1%) also contribute to the final blend.
And finally there is the no expense spared winemaking with just 540 cases produced. This includes 13 months in 30% new oak with a small amount aged in concrete egg. The attention to detail even goes down to the barrel selection:
Director of Winemaking Jeremy Leffert believes that aging our Amor Fati Rhône varieties in large-format hogsheads, puncheons and Demi-Muids is ideal for preserving the energy and freshness of the vineyard. These vessels allow the pure fruit tones to prevail while still incorporating the complexity and dimension provided by oak aging.
For the 2022 Grenache, Jeremy narrowed his barrel selection to two cooperages: Atelier Centre France and Stockinger, a cult cooper from Austria. The light-toast Stockinger vessels are prized for their ability to show transparency and respect for the fruit while building midpalate volume. The light-toast French oak vessels from Atelier Centre France contribute gentle toasty undercurrents to the wine.

Summer 2026 Shipping Info
Shipping is a flat $9.99 per order, no matter how many packs you buy. This applies to both Summer Shipments AND Summer Holds. Summer Shipments also have an additional charge built into the product price for the heat protection package. Here’s how it works:
Summer Ship (+$8 for the Heat Protection Package) – Packages ship in styrofoam and use refrigerated shipping. This includes refrigerated trucks to local hubs for the South, Midwest and East Coast and internal refrigeration (ice packs) in boxes for the West Coast (AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR, WA). Final delivery will be on regular UPS trucks without refrigeration (just like last year), thus the reason for the styrofoam.
Note that unlike last year, packages will not go 2-day air as the refrigerated trucks are a better option, however this will add additional transit time. Trucks will only pick up from our shipper once per week so with our normal order processing time of up to 10 days before orders are sent out, packages will likely take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to arrive in-home.
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held in a temperature controlled warehouse for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Vineyard: Sustainably grown at our coastal Murmur Vineyard
Appellation: Santa Maria ValleyTasting notes: The 2022 Amor Fati Grenache is flush with complex aromas of strawberry spice, black plum, summer herbs, rose petal and forest mushroom. The palate is bright and electric with flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, cherry, purple flower and toasted oak. Earthy notes emerge with increasing lift on the finish, punctuated by broad, sleek textures that display impressive length. A Grenache that displays ultra-coastal energy and style.
Murmur Vineyard: Murmur Vineyard is renowned for producing ultra-coastal, cool-climate wines of extraordinary energy, tension and refinement. Situated just 13 unobstructed miles east of the Pacific Ocean and in close proximity to the mouth of the Santa Maria River, Murmur Vineyard is distinguished by its prevailing marine influence. Planted by Tooth & Nail owner-founder Rob Murray in 2008, this vineyard was carefully plotted and planted to 35 vineyard blocks spanning a variety of aspects. The result is a wide array of expressions within each planted variety. The soils at Murmur Vineyard are predominantly composed of marine sand parent material with varying amounts of clay and loam. The sheltered interior of the vineyard has shown to be perfect for Grenache and Syrah, as it averages five degrees warmer than the breezier western flanks—allowing for full ripeness while retaining pure cool-climate character.
Winemaking: The fruit for this wine comes from a pair of blocks planted to two distinct Grenache Noir clones—362 (70%) and Alban (30%). The grapes were hand-harvested under cover of darkness at Murmur Vineyard on October 21 and October 28, 2022. Upon arrival at the winery in the cool morning hours, the clusters were gently destemmed and cold soaked for three days to initiate gentle extraction. After fermentation in upright concrete tanks, the free-run wine was racked to 500-liter Austrian oak puncheons and 600-liter French oak Demi-Muids, inclusive of 30% new oak. The small press portion of the wine was matured separately in a concrete egg. All of the lots were aged undisturbed for 13 months, prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The Alban Clone provides a foundation of deep, dark fruit, while Clone 362 contributes high-toned red fruit flavors. Small contributions of Graciano (10%), Mourvèdre (2%) and Syrah (1%) round out the flavors and textural profile. The Graciano in particular lends black fruit character and fresh acidity to the wine.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Tooth & Nail Amor Fati Grenache opens with a very complex, inviting aroma of strawberry, black cherry, damp earth, baking spice and star anise plus light floral notes and a touch of mushroom. There’s a lot going in the multi-layered nose making for a very nice start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be juicy and fresh with good acidity and similar flavors to nose although the earthy, mushroom notes take a backseat in the mouth. It’s all wrapped up in a smooth, wonderful texture. With plenty of depth and complexity, this is just a pleasure to drink.
It ends dry, juicy and a bit grippy on the long and lingering finish and it was just as good on day 2 after simply being left corked on the counter overnight. We love it! If you’re planning ahead for Thanksgiving, this wine will definitely make an impression.
