A smooth blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Monastrell and Syrah at a great Costco price, we review the Juan Gil Red Blend.
A red blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Monastrell (aka Mourvedre) and 10% Syrah from Jumilla, Spain. The wine spends 12 months in French and American oak and is vegan friendly.
We found the Juan Gil Red Blend at Costco for $11.99 but the wine-searcher average is $15. It is imported by Gil Family Estates.
From the bottle:
Our Juan Gil estate wines are named after our patriarch who founded the winery in 1916 over 100 years ago. Red Blend is the result of our finest Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 45%, Monastrell 45%, and Syrah 10%. Our extremely old vineyards sit at 2,100' elevation and are dry farmed.
The grapes are hand harvested, fermented, then aged for one year in French & American Oak barrels. We use all sustainable practices in our winemaking.

We're always happy to check out a new wine from Spain, especially when it features the wonderful Monastrell (Mourvedre) grape. We are also already quite familiar with the producer from the excellent Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell so let's check it out!
The 2020 Juan Gil Red Blend opens with a pleasing aroma of dark fruit, licorice, a little spice and a little vanilla.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, tasty, balanced, easy to drink wine with enough depth and complexity to keep it interesting. The flavors are similar to the nose but there is more spice in the mouth and the dark fruit is ripe and juicy.
It ends dry and long. While the Monastrell doesn't figure as prominently in this bottle as the Silver Label, this is a pretty nice red blend nonetheless.
