Aki Nakai’s vineyard sits on a low bench on the eastern, warmer side of the Russian River Valley AVA. This benchland sits in a pocket of hills that keeps it cool later into the morning while still clearing for full sun in the afternoon – a combination that yields full ripeness with a relatively extended hang time for the area. Aki lives on the property and farms it himself, as he has for decades. There are six clones of Pinot Noir planted here, all of which thrive. For 2020, we selected a roughly equal proportion of clones 777, 667, and 115 with small amounts of 828 and Swan.

These outstanding grapes are then lovingly crafted into a fine Burgundian style Pinot Noir by Lucas Meeker, who you may recognize from several of our previous deals. The wine spends around 18 months in neutral and twice used French oak barrels.

Split fermentation for complexity; 5/6 to tank and 1/6 to open-top bin. Fully destemmed with a 12% juice bleed immediately after. Three day cold soak, inoculated with WS (tank) and MB15 (bin). 1-2x pumpovers on tank per day, 1-3x punchdowns on bin per day. Pressed after 32 days on skins (9/14- 10/16/20) directly to barrel, free fraction and press fraction aged separately. Extended lees contact.

Like you, probably, we’re annoyed every time somebody says they’re making “Burgundian” style Pinot in California (especially because 99.9% of the time, they aren’t). What we will say, though, is that we look to that tradition when it comes to structure-building and fearlessness with tannins while making Pinot Noir.

The 2020 Meeker Nakai Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir opens with a pleasing aroma of black cherry, a bit of earthiness and touches of tomato plant, cola and spice. It is especially nice after it has a couple hours of air.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth and quite elegant with similar flavors to the nose including the nice earthy streak and touches of tobacco, cola and spice. This is a great example of Pinot Noir that while very tasty now, should develop even more with time in the bottle.

It ends dry, quite long and a bit grippy and as the winery notes is more Burgundian in nature than many ripe fruit centric New World styles. It was just as good on day 2.
