Unconventional By Nature
Terroir is everything, but so as they say is location, and sometimes those aren’t the same place. We have chosen to stay at our vineyard, winery and estate tasting room to allow our customers to experience our unique terroir. Opposed to what might seem apparent by the concentration of valley wineries, the best vineyard sites are not necessarily alongside the pre-existing major thoroughfares.In the Foothills, we can grow any warm climate varietals but focus on those that perform at their best in granitic soils. Italian and Rhone varietals benefit from our consistently ideal climate. Our vineyard and winery’s location straddles ridgelines above an elevation of 2000 ft, benefitting from cooling afternoon breezes, abundant sunshine and low yielding rocky soils resulting in our unique terroir.
The Il Gioiello, “the jewel,” name comes from the final home of famed astronomer and scientist Galileo Galilei. Our 2 Roads brand name was inspired by my favorite Robert Frost poem and Morse is my name and most importantly the name of my parents. All three have inspired a slightly different approach to my choices and my respect for integrity, honesty and hard work.
Our wines and winery reflect these values; unpretentious, no concentrates or additives, just wine grapes and great value wines. In my life, the right wine has always been the wingman of a good meal, not the star of the meal. I recall great meals far better than other pleasures and that is why we make “food wines”.
As the French proverb says, “to have a great meal, one requires great hunger”. Having 17 unique estate varietals and clones allow us to create complexity and balance in our wines difficult to achieve with single varietals.
The first wine in today's 4-pack is the 2014 Morse Syrah "Grace". This wine is 90% Syrah from the estate Deadman Fork Vineyard and 10% Mourvedre from the Il Gioiello estate vineyard. The wine was aged for 30 months in over 50% new French oak! We gave it 94+ points. (Yes, it's that good!) You will receive 2 bottles.
The Italian part of today's 4-pack is the 2016 Il Gioiello Barbera (100%) from 3 different estate vineyards (Il Gioiello Reserve and Lower Block and Rancho Victoria). The wine spends 23 months in 35% new French oak. A great example of Amador County Barbera, we gave it 91-93 points. You will receive 2 bottles of this wine as well.

Up first, let's take a look at the Syrah!
From the winery:
The varietal that was supposed to conquer Cabernet Sauvignon, and for good reason. Syrahs can be all over the board, but our Estate and Amador Syrahs are rich and silky and complement beef like no other wine. Smokey, dark berry, dried fruits and tannins that benefit from a bit of aging.

The 2014 Morse Syrah "Grace" opens with a strong, spicy, savory aroma full of licorice, leather, mint, cedar, a little chocolate and much more to go along with the ripe, dark berry fruit. It's a fabulous start.
The wine tastes smooth, rich, silky, quite spicy and meaty. This is the good stuff! Big, chewy and delicious, just give it plenty of time to breathe when you first pop it open. It actually tastes quite young even at almost 9 years of age. I think it will likely get even better over the next 5 years or so.
It ends dry, tannic, savory and quite long and was just as good on day 2.
And now on to the Barbera!

The 2016 Barbera is outstanding if you love classic Barbera with bright cherry flavors with a great acidity and herbs.

The 2016 Il Gioiello Barbera opens with tons of candied cherry notes on the nose, along with lots of wonderful spice and herbal notes to go along with the dark berry fruit. It's savory, very aromatic and very attractive right out of the bottle. Some leather and cigar box notes also come out with time in the glass. I think I could smell this one all day!
Tasting the wine reveals it be similar to the nose and equally delicious in the mouth with some nice secondary notes from a few years of age adding complexity. With a smooth mouthfeel, juicy fruit and good acidity this is quite a tasty example of Barbera.
It ends dry, quite long and juicy and was just as good, if not even better, on day 2.
