We’re delighted to bring you a new vintage on one of our best-selling deals ever.

As you probably know by now, we’re huge fans of Pedroncelli Winery. One of the original wineries in Dry Creek Valley and one of only 4 remaining when Prohibition was repealed, it is now on to the fourth generation.

Long known for their excellent Zinfandel, today we’ve got a special treat with their Sonoma Classico, a scrumptious proprietary blend of Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Merlot and Syrah from estate vineyards aged 12 months in American oak barrels, 30% of which were new. And with this vintage they’ve even take things up a notch with the addition of the Portuguese varieties Tinta Madeira and Souzao to the blend!

Not only have we loved this wine for years, but based on the feedback we received when we’ve offered it multiple times in the past, you all did too. It also has a pedigree of high scores and awards over the past few vintages, going all the way up to an incredible 97 points.

We rate the 2022 we are offering here today very similarly to those past offers, putting it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating (92-93 points).

With a very reasonable SRP of $24, you don’t typically find this wine discounted much if at all.

Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend. Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10). The 4th of July holiday may also add an extra day.

These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.

Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).

Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. Sonoma Classico: The standard by which all others are measured.

Definition of a classic: judged over a while to be of the highest quality and an outstanding example.

Sonoma County’s classic roots are in those early blends ranging from “Burgundy”, “Claret”, and “Mountain Red” to today’s high-end “Red Wine Blends”. These wines have been a regular part of Sonoma County’s heritage. Sonoma Classico is the next step in the evolution of these blends. The classic style invites you to gather around the table as it becomes part of the meal, not the centerpiece. It is the sharing of this wine with family and friends that defines it as a standard.

From the fruit-forward aromas to the lingering flavors, Sonoma Classico blends the characteristics of each grape seamlessly: red fruits with a touch of warm cooking spices; plum, spice, and dark berries with smooth tannins and light toast notes. Rich and velvety, this is a medium-bodied blend with a rounded and lingering finish.

The Vineyard & Cellar Notes: The vintage of 2022 was influenced by low amounts of rain due to drought and was followed by a warm summer and warmer harvest, which sped up maturity while concentrating flavors and color. Harvest was early, and the different estate vineyard blocks were picked over the first two weeks of September. A rich wine with intense aromatics, varietal flavors, and mild acidity is the result.

Barrel aging took place over 12 months in new and seasoned American oak barrels with 30% new oak. Working toward an approachable style, the time in oak softens the wine and adds complex layers to the finished product. The oak influence is nuanced and a supporting player because of the judicious use of new oak blended with neutral barrels.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Pedroncelli Sonoma Classico begins with an excellent and very enticing aroma of dark fruit, lots of baking spice, vanilla, licorice, cedar, anise, a little graphite and more. It’s an awesome and harmonious start.

Taking a sip reveals a juicy, dusty, spicy and delicious wine! Smooth with firm tannins and good acidity, this is a lovely, flavor-packed, full-bodied blend full of ripe dark fruit plus more baking spice, licorice, balsamic notes, cedar, dark chocolate and vanilla. Just yum, we love it!

I also love the addition of the Portuguese grape varieties here which gives it a bit of a deeper, darker note versus past vintages.

And as good as it is right now, we know from previous vintages that it has great aging potential too. This is exactly what you’d expect from Pedroncelli – excellent quality at an amazing price.

It ends with a dry, long, slightly grippy and delicious finish. It was just as delicious on day 2. This is a no-brainer!
